Google has reportedly opened up Maps by placing tools in the hands of users, who can now pin-point locations, draw routes, and attach photos/videos to online maps.
With the all new 'MyMaps,' users can share knowledge about their neighbourhoods and other places in the form of customized maps.
Says Jessica Lee, Product Manager for Google Maps, 'who better to create maps than local experts?'
Using MyMaps, pictures clicked or videos shot at a particular place can be uploaded onto the same specific location on the map. Even YouTube videos and other snippets of Web content can be featured.
People with an idea how to add bits of hypertext code to a Web site or blog will be able to add videos to MyMaps in a matter of a few clicks.
Besides, users will retain the option of either making their maps public or keeping them unlisted for personal use or sharing within a select group.
Effectively, doing a local search will now throw up relevant user-generated MyMaps alongside conventional results.
Initially, MyMaps will be available in USA; while national versions of Google will be available in nine other countries, including Australia, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, and Spain.
