However, bandwidth providers are now saying that they expect Internet services in the country to be back to about 80 percent of their usual speed by end of today.
With Internet services in India and parts of West Asia disrupted following breakdown of two major undersea cables in the Mediterranean Sea, Indian Internet service providers had earlier said full restoration of services would be possible only after ten to fifteen days.
However, bandwidth providers are now saying that they expect Internet services in the country to be back to about 80 percent of their usual speed by end of today.
Two cables that carry Internet traffic deep under the Mediterranean Sea snapped on Wednesday this week. Across the country, business and personal users complained that Internet services were dreadfully slow, and that they could not access any Web site. Some of the damage from this slowdown had a ripple effect on India's lucrative outsourcing industry as well.
But during the course of today, international bandwidth providers shifted their Internet traffic to cables under the Pacific Ocean. This was confirmed by Rajesh Chharia, president of the Indian Internet Service Providers Association.
With Internet services now limping back to normalcy across India, the situation in Egypt and some other parts of West Asia isn't that good.
The Egyptian Minister of Communications and Information, Tarek Kamil, was quoted as saying that in Egypt, Internet services would be up to about 80 percent of their usual capacity in the next 48 hours.
