    Intel announces a dual-core version of its Atom processor; on its antiquated 945G platform

Come September, Intel will launch a dual-core version of its Atom chip -- the Atom 330. Expected to be a 1.6GHz part with a 533MHz bus, and an on-die L2 cache of 1MB (512K per processor) -- the dual-core will be married with an updated D945GCLF2 motherboard, Ars Technica reports. The 330 will offer HyperThreading support on each processor, for a total of four virtual cores. It would be of interest to see whether this beefed up iteration performs better than its current version does -- although, as noted in that news piece, the real bottleneck seems to be the 945G platform, which is still retained through the D945GCLF2 motherboard.

Which means this new version of processors will not qualify for NetBook processors to take benefit of special pricing benefit on XP.
