Sony dismisses rumors of using Intel's Larrabee chip for PlayStation 4
While the web was abuzz about Sony using Intel's Larrabee graphics chip for the forthcoming PlayStation console PS4, a Sony Computer Entertainment Europe representative has dismissed the rumor.
"Its nonsense and quite possibly the best work of fiction I've read, since Lord of the Rings," said the representative while speaking to Techradar.
Inquirer had reported that Sony's engineering team lady at the CES 2009 said that the next PlayStation console, expected in 2012, will have Intel's Larrabee GPU.
There was also talk about the next XBOX version's GPU come from AMD's ATI factory. With Intel and ATI in the picture for PlayStation 4, XBOX and possibly the Wii 2, Nvidia seems to have been pushed out from the console GPU list.
Intel revealed that Larrabee is a stand-alone GPU based on scalable number of x86 architecture based cores. Larrabee is expected to deliver stream processing performance with full CPU programmability and DirectX API, as well as OpenGL API support. Technically, it is an ideal suitor for the PlayStation console upgrade.
However, the most interesting part is the timing of this rumor. It seems to be at least a month old, since CES 2009 concluded in January and even the GPU chip-console timelines don't seem to match very well.
Obviously, Intel was accused of scoring on a console to get developers attention to code for Larrabee chip.
Intel's Larrabee chip is due in 2009-2010, while Sony's next console is expected to appear in 2012. Also, Sony is expected to achieve break-even point on the PlayStation 3 console this year.
Well, Nvidia must be happy to hear of Sony's dismissal of the rumor, as they weren't too impressed with Larrabee.
The next generation gaming consoles will probably arrive in 2012.
"The next generation gaming consoles will probably arrive in 2012."
I doubt that, I've heard 2016/2018 And seeing how Sony is struggling in the console market to make profit.
