Intel plans to marry Atom with Linux to power their MID devices
The launch of Intel's Atom processor heralded a new era of cheap, portable PCs. Know what else goes with cheap? Linux. It's been no mystery that Linux and the Atom were destined to go hand in hand--Intel even launched the Moblin initiative soon after the processor. The project is dedicated to the development of the cheap Mobile Internet Device (MID), based on, naturally, the Atom and Linux (MOBile LINux--that's how the project gets its name).
Linux development, however, is a little out of Intel's domain, which is why they went out shopping and came back with OpenedHand, a London-based firm that develops mobile applications for Linux. They've developed for the Nokia N810 Internet tablet and the One Laptop Per Child, among others, so their resume is pretty solid. According to the site, the team will "focus on the development of the Moblin Software Platform, the optimized software stack for Intel Atom processors."
It's been clear for a while that Linux is the mobile platform of the future, what with Nokia acquiring TrollTech earlier this year, but the differences in hardware will make the mobile platform wars akin to the IBM PC vs. Macintosh tussle, only with a lot more players.
