Intel Atom Laptops Have Arrived

Intel expects Atom-based systems to account for over a third of Intel's notebook shipments by 2012.
At the recent Intel Developer Forum (IDF), Intel revealed some systems running on its mobile quad core processors and the upcoming "Calpella" platform, expected next year. The Calpella platform is said to be the mobile version of the "Nehalem" core.
The systems on display were running Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9300 and the Intel Core 2 Quad 9100, with the 9100 carrying a Centrino label. Both the chips run at 2.53GHz, with 12MB of Level 2 cache. The 9100 is targeted at the workstation segment while the Extreme QX9300 is being positioned as a gaming-oriented chip.
Dadi Perlmutter, Executive VP and General Manager of Intel's mobile platforms group, was present at the occasion and talked about the various categories of notebooks and seems particularly upbeat on the netbook front - as he displayed a host of devices based on the Atom platform. To give a fair idea of what Intel is expecting from the Atom, they hope it will account for over a third of Intel's notebook shipments by 2012.
Intel did not seemed too concerned about the prospect of the Atom cannibalizing some of the regular notebook processor line-ups.
