Sainul Abideen, a 24-year old Indian engineering student, has reportedly developed a new video storage method called "Rainbow Video Disk" (RVD).
Under the new method, colored geometric shapes instead of zeros and ones are stored in dense patterns on paper. Using this method, 256GB of data can be stored on an ordinary sheet of A4-size paper or a plastic sheet.
The files containing text, images, sounds, and video clips are encoded in the "Rainbow Format" as colored circles, triangles, and squares. They are then printed as dense graphics on paper at a density of 2.7GB per square inch. The encoded content can be read through a specially developed RVD scanner, and then decoded into the original digital format. However, the encoding and decoding procedure has not been revealed as yet.
Interestingly, the same data when transferred to a DVD could exceed the storage densities of Blu-ray or HD DVD media and store up to 450GB of data.
Reportedly, a RVD looks like a print of modern art. Abideen said that there are also small scanners available that could fit inside laptop computers or mobile phones and read subscriber identity module (SIM) card-size RVDs containing 5GB of data.
Pointing out the advantages of RVD over other storage media, Abideen said paper is biodegradable, unlike CDs or DVDs, and costs a lot less than CDs or DVDs.
Is it time to say goodbye to CDs, DVDs, Zip drives? I don't think so. How far this claim is workable? Here are some expert opinions on this regard for your reference. Check it out.

Why do people like Sainul baffalo or Baffoon Abideen do this. To cause a stir in people's minds. Attract them and then try to get money for furthering their research. What a waste of time.
has anybody seen this for them selves? i would really love to have this software, as others have mentioned this would be a good backup utilitie, esspecialy if you had a plotter, ;p then forget the little a4 sheet of 256gig, and hello massive network backups in just a few hours. ;P the world would make that man rich!
Alhamdu lillah keep it up, backup costs would be minimal with different technology. "The development of technology should be tailored to the needs of emerging markets and reach out to the masses. In a country like ours, where the cost of acquisition of a data backup is high.
Rightly recognizes the market demand by creating such invention would immensly help our people. Are we going back to paper please think over.
Hats off
When someone mailed this news article (at least) 3 months ago, I thought it was a scam. Now I am HAPPY to hear that it is not so. My only concern is that it shouldnt be flimsy, affected by water easily and all...
hey dont drag chennai into it. . . insult the guy not the place. . .and its NOT a scam. . tho it will be atleast 10 years before it can be commercially viable like dvd's etc. .
