This ain't an April fools day joke gone horribly late. Sometime next year, India will send into orbit a satellite dedicated to the youth across the globe. The satellite will carry scientific instruments developed by students from Indian, Russian, and other universities.
Originally the brain-child of India's very dynamic former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, Kalam had put forth the proposal during a visit to Russia two years ago. The plan is that sometime next year, a mini-spacecraft will piggyback aboard a polar satellite launch vehicle; it will carry a remote sensing satellite into orbit. The satellite will be launched from the Satish Dhawan Space Center in Sriharikota, which is located at a distance of about 90kms from Chennai.
The scientific instruments on-board the satellite will study data on earth-imaging, atmospheric applications, solar emissions, and other galactic observations. The mini-spacecraft will weigh less than 100kgs; it's currently under development at the ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization) Satellite Development Center in Bangalore.
