The halt in the decision comes after the over a month after four countries, including India, appealed against Microsoft's Office Open XML (OOXML) file format been declared as the international standard.
Over a month after four countries, including India, appealed against Microsoft's Office Open XML (OOXML) file format been declared as the international standard, the International Standardization Organization (ISO) has now put its global standardization decision on hold for several months.
In April, ISO and the International Electro-technical Commission (IEC) approved OOXML file format as an international standard and gave participating countries two months time to appeal against the decision. Therefore, India, Brazil, South Africa, and Venezuela appealed against the decision complaining about the fast track process, which did not give them enough time to discuss improvements in the format. Further, they claim that it is not fully compatible with other document formats.
Open XML is a platform-independent open standard for word-processing documents, presentations, and spreadsheets to help ensure that older files are readable, even if the program used to create them has changed significantly.
