Researchers from IBM's India Research Labs have developed a Web-based, interactive language technology to help people improve English speaking skills.
Researchers from IBM's India Research Labs have developed a Web-based, interactive language technology to help people improve their English speaking skills.
The technology evaluates and offers detailed scores for grammar, pronunciation, comprehension, and other spoken-language skills. It works on specially-adapted speech recognition software to score the pronunciation of passages as also stressing of syllables for individual words.
The technology consists of voice-enabled grammar evaluation tests that identify areas for improvement by highlighting shortcomings and providing examples of correct pronunciation and grammar.
The technology based on advanced speech processing techniques, was initially developed for a leading call center in the country to help improve the conversational skills of their staff.
Talking about the development, Dan Dias, director, IBM's India Research Labs, said, "We are focused on the application of our technologies in ways that matter to people, businesses, and society. English has become the common language of the business world, so the ability to communicate effectively in English can dictate success or failure in integrating into the global business environment."
IBM said that the technology is designed for easy learning, allowing interacting with tools, just like playing an online game. For example, if a student mispronounces a word, the learning tool can immediately spot it and help correct it.
Ashish Verma, one of the researchers working on the project, is of the view that Globalization is a significant driver, and that this technology can help develop the language skills that are absolutely necessary for an individual, company, region/country to compete in a global market.

hi everybody! anyone can help me in my problem in listening?. My english is poor so as my listening capability. I work in an Indian company,I really feel hard to understand their english diction. I used to communicate with them in English since that?s the only way to do so and I fell a bit of shy because most of the time I used to say ?pardon? or sometimes I mis-interpreted what they meant. English the langauge in old days Britishers spreaded it throughout the world. Now it is turn for Microsoft and other American computer companies like IBM to spread it. You go deeply in this language, you really enjoy at par. We people can talk more grammaticly correct than enlish men. In Russia or Chinese continent, people were avoiding to talk, however, this is IBM, Microsoft and computer companies, they made them to talk this langauge correctly. This is really helpful and it will really intigrate the world more closely which is a need of today. No matter who we are, which country we belong to, but still we are too close with each other, and this is a common language who joint the people and promoting this is a great role done by software companies, since this is a computer era all over. I hope it would be useful for all computer users.
