IBM, Partners Form 32nm Alliance

IBM, Partners Form 32nm Alliance

Techtree News Staff, May 25, 2007 1203 hrs IST

Resulting technologies may be used by the five partners and other companies to help solve real-life problems in various fields.

IBM and its Common Platform technology partners - Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing and Samsung Electronics, along with joint-development alliance partners - Infineon Technologies and Freescale Semiconductor, have signed a series of semiconductor process development and manufacturing agreements.

Significantly, the joint agreements focus on 32-nanometer (nm) bulk complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) process technologies, and development of process design kits (PDKs) to support this technology.

Building on the success of these agreements, partners will be able to produce high-performance yet energy-efficient chips based on 90nm, 65nm, and 45nm process technology.

The partners plan to pool their combined expertise and collaborate in order to design, develop, and manufacture advanced technology through 2010. And those technologies which form leading platforms for a broad range of systems would be used by the five partners and other companies to help solve real-life problems in the fields of medicine, communications, transportation, and security.

Talking about the partnership, Michael Cadigan, General Manager of Semiconductor Solutions, IBM Global Engineering Solutions, said, "IBM remains convinced that collaborative innovation in an open ecosystem of partners is the key to technology leadership, both now and in the years to come. With the extensions of our agreements to the 32nm generation, IBM is working together with its alliance partners to deliver leading-edge technology that promises to dramatically change the way we live, work, and play."

Franz Neppl, Senior Vice President of Base Technologies and Services, Infineon Technologies, said, "The jointly developed technologies will enable us provide our customers cost-effective system-on-silicon solutions, and manufacturing capabilities for our core business in communications and automotive/industrial areas."

IBM, Chartered, and Samsung, as Common Platform technology manufacturers, will be able to use the jointly developed 32nm process technology, as also design kits to synchronize manufacturing facilities. This will in turn facilitate production of identical chips for high-volume OEM clients of these companies.

Besides, the alliance is expected to include joint development of an enablement package that would support common design tools, thus allowing customers utilize the full potential of this advanced technology for specific products.

Meanwhile, all 32nm development activities will be reportedly conducted at IBM's state-of-the-art semiconductor fabrication facility at East Fishkill in New York.

"As we now collaborate on our fourth node under this joint model, we have seen how each company brings unique strengths and expertise to drive a customer-centric offering," said Liang-Choo Hsia, Senior Vice President of Technology Development, Chartered.
