Cheap, efficient cooling that won't pollute
Storing food in rural India is a problem. With electricity in short supply, food distributors end up using traditional refrigerators running on diesel generators for their cooling needs. Clearly, this is hardly economical-the units themselves cost a lot, and when you add the cost of the generators and all that diesel, you've got a financial nightmare on your hands.
Promethean Power Systems, based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, has developed a new solar-powered system that ought to take these costs down significantly. The design is simple enough: regular solar panels, thermoelectric modules that convert electricity to heat, and a regular compressor-based fridge. When the sun isn't shining particularly bright, the solar panels will be able to generate enough electricity to power the thermoelectric modules, which in turn will power the compressor. Around afternoon, when the sun is high and bright, the solar panels themselves can power the compressor, and the thermoelectric modules can give even more cooling.
The entire system will cost a little less than the current setup, but won't have any fuel or maintenance costs. The company plans to have a 500-litre affair ready to send here by next year.
