Hitachi 2.5-Inch Hard Drives in 2007

Hitachi Global Storage Technologies has reportedly announced that it will be offering two new 2.5-inch hard drives with at least 200GB storage in 2007.
Hitachi Global Storage Technologies has reportedly announced that it will be offering two new 2.5-inch hard drives, each with at least 200 gigabytes (GB) of storage capacity, in 2007.
In line with the industry thinking, Hitachi too believes that over the next couple of years, opportunities in the 2.5-inch segment will grow significantly.
Out of the two anticipated 2.5-inch products, one will be in the 200GB, 7200 RPM range, promising high capacity and performance, and will be available in the first half of 2007.
The other of the two will have a 5400 RPM hard drive, and will offer storage capacity in the quarter-terabyte range. This 2.5-inch hard drive is expected to ship in the second half of 2007.
Both new products will provide hard drive-level data encryption as an added security feature. They will also offer a flash memory/hard drive hybrid option for enhanced battery life, greater performance, and increased reliability. The two products will use perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology, building on the success of Hitachi's debut PMR hard drive, the Travelstar 5K160.
Besides, the 2.5-inch drives will offer hybrid as an option on the same base platform. As such, when combined with low-cost, high-capacity storage, the hybrid solution would present a significantly higher value hard drive, especially in mobile products.
Hitachi will offer full data encryption at the hardware level, allowing data security to be carried out with little or no impact to the system speed. Hitachi's hard drive-level data encryption scrambles data using a password-generated key as it is being written to the disk, and then descrambles the data with the key as it is being retrieved.
The hybrid hard drives will have Hitachi s security technology encrypting data in both flash memory and hard drive.
