Inspired by Apple's success story with the iPhone multi-touch interface, HP hopes to replicate the success with its range of handhelds and notebooks
Looks like touchscreens are here to stay. The Wall Street Journal, in a recent report said that the world's number 1 PC manufacturer HP is gung-ho about touchscreens and has an array of touch-enabled products in the pipeline for the next 18 months.
Phil McKinney, the Chief Technology Officer for the company's laptop-making Personal Systems Group, said "We're focused on recognizing the potential of touch now. We see touch as the preferred method for non-technical users."
Obviously inspired by the Apple success story with the iPhone multi-touch interface, HP hopes to replicate the success with its range of handhelds and notebooks. Additionally, the company's sagging stock price could get a beneficial boost with these products.
Arch-rival and world number 2, Dell, has already launched a few touchscreen products and the strategy seems to be working. Dell is also offering software updates to its Latitude XT tablet PC range to add multi-touch capabilities. Ironically, the manufacturer who started this trend seems to be in no mood to implement touchscreen functionality to its range of notebooks. Although the new MacBook versions do have multi-touch capability built into the track pad, there is no sign of Apple implementing a touchscreen in MacBooks anytime soon.

First off the TouchScreen is not new to HP. The TouchSmart PC was out 2 years ago and their tablet pc 3 years ago both have touch capabilities, even before Apple released the IPhone. Though, HP's did not have the sexy appeal nevertheless it was first to marke with the technology even beating is archrival Dell. So to say that Apple started this tend is far fetch. Viiva HP!!
