HCL, AMD Launch Low-cost PC

Dayanidhi Maran, Union Minister- Communications & Information Technology, has unveiled HCL and AMD's low-cost PC.
Dayanidhi Maran, Union Minister - Communications and Information Technology, has unveiled HCL's low-cost PC, based on AMD's x86 1600 MHz processor.
The launch is in furtherance of Maran's vision to make computers more affordable and to promote internet penetration across the country.
The new PC developed by AMD in conjunction with HCL, is priced at Rs 9,990, and is being touted as the country's most affordable home computer. Bundled with the Microsoft Windows XP Starter Edition, this PC costs Rs 11,240.
Speaking at the occasion, Dayanidhi Maran said, I am very happy that AMD has taken this initiative, to increase Internet penetration and enable a computer with AMD's x86 1600 MHz processor at this price point. Along with affordable broadband solutions from BSNL at Rs 250 per month, and with Microsoft Windows XP Starter Edition, this PC can be used as a vehicle to significantly increase broadband penetration in India."
"AMD's 50x15 vision shows AMD's commitment to develop relevant technology solutions for India's needs. All of these developments not only further the cause of the National Common Minimum Programme (NCMP), but also help to bridge the knowledge gap between different socio-economic groups, to make them ready for the information age. I am very excited about the possibilities this announcement opens up for all Indians", Maran said.
AMD envisions affordable Internet access and computing capabilities for 50 per cent of the world population by 2015, calling it the "50x15" vision. As part of this vision, AMD will facilitate computing platforms based on its x86 microprocessors, to address the needs of the Indian market i.e. affordability, internet readiness, ease-of-use, security, low-power usage, wireless capability, security, dust-resistance, etc.
To meet this challenge, AMD desires Dayanidhi Maran to join the newly-formed 50x15 global advisory committee, comprising world experts from industry, government, academia and the non-profit sector.
Ajay Marathe, corporate vice president, AMD and president, AMD India, said that the new low-cost PC is a significant step towards realizing AMD and the Department of Communications & Information Technology's joint aim, of providing affordable computing and Internet connectivity to the Indian people.
The new PC is believed to be a viable solution, because it offers sustainable ecosystem support backed by AMD's technology, is affordable and is immediately available country-wide at authorized HCL re-sellers.
