European Union working out the modalities of a new legislation to streamline energy-efficiency standards for TVs

Rising energy concerns worldwide is likely to see the advent of increasing number of energy-efficient televisions and the phasing out of big power-guzzling plasma TVs.

The European Union is presently working out the modalities of a new legislation to streamline energy-efficiency standards for TVs. The legislation, which will come into force this Spring, will set minimum standards to be adhered to for televisions.

We are likely to see a ban on giant flatscreen TVs, including many plasma TVs, which consume a large amount of energy unlike those that use cathode ray tubes (CRTs). Big plasma sets reportedly consume four times more power, resulting in the emission of four times as much carbon dioxide as the biggest CRT.

Also, it will become mandatory to have energy ratings to identify the most energy-efficient ones from the rest.

Incidentally, plans are afoot in the US to ensure that only "green" televisions are sold from 2011.

Techtree, you make it sound like Plasmas have no future. To keep things in the right perspective, you might have also pointed out that a 42inch Plasma consumes around 300w of power as compared to around 210 w for an LCD. Not a lot of difference if you ask me. Also Panasonic's new plasmas displayed at the CES this year are around 60 percent more energy efficient. Plasmas have no future? Yeah right ! Get a life techtree. They will be around as long as LCDs.

No they wont. Plasmas will be the first to go (max life not mroe than 8 yrs). Lcds and OLEDs will coexist and better of those two will prevail.
