Green Peace Ranks Greenest Companies

Techtree News Staff, Jul 04, 2008 1655 hrs IST

Green Peace has ranked companies according to their carbon footprint. Read to find out more.

Aiming to prod electronic companies to take responsibility for the harmful effects their products have on the environment, Green Peace had released a 'Guide to Greener Electronics' in the year 2006. Following that, the organization has been announcing a list of the top 18 companies according to the size of their carbon footprint every 3 months.

In the latest issue, Sony Ericsson and Sony have topped the list with the smallest carbon footprint, both scoring 5.1 points out of 10, while Nintendo has been placed at the bottom with 0.8 points. The full ranking list can be viewed here.

The criteria adopted by Green Peace for these rankings are as follows. The companies should:

  • Clean up their products by eliminating hazardous substances

  • Take back and recycle their products responsibly once they become obsolete

  • Reduce the climate impacts of their operations and products

  • The detailed criteria for the rankings can be found here.

Green Peace states that these rankings are solely based on public information available on the companies' websites. It deducts penalty points of those companies that are found to be violating their policies.

This latest issue of the Green Peace Guide to Greener Electronics was published last month, so if you're planning to buy a new mobile phone, perhaps Sony Ericsson could be your contribution to a cleaner, greener environment.
