Govt. Launches Hindi Software

The Government has launched a chip version of Hindi translation software, on mobile phones and the Internet.
Our "rashtra-bhasha" just got tech-savvy! During the annual "Hindi Divas" ceremony at Vigyan Bhavan on Wednesday, 14 September, 2005, the Government launched a chip version of Hindi translation software, on mobile phones and the internet.
The MANTRA (Machine assisted Translation Tool) software will facilitate translation of Government documents from English to Hindi, while the LILA (Learn Indian Languages through Artificial Intelligence) software will help non Hindi speakers to learn Hindi on mobile phones and the internet.
The new software was unveiled by Union Home Minister - Shivraj Patil, who commended the efforts of the Department of Official Languages and the Ministry of Home Affairs in developing these chips and taking other virtual measures for popularizing Hindi among the masses.
According to official sources, the LILA series which is already available on the web for learning Hindi through Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and English will now be available in Bengali as well.
Patil said that the new software which is currently available in the form of multimedia cards on cellular phones promises to make Hindi learning easy and high-tech.
The MANTRA-Rajbhasha software is designed for easy translation of documents and will be put to use in the fields of administration, health and agriculture. The software features an interactive graphic user interface and has dictionary, thesaurus, format retention facility and other tools.
As part of the celebrations, Patil also gave away the Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi Raj Bhasha Awards and asserted that there should be greater use of Hindi in government administrative departments, as also in the non-Hindi speaking belt in the country.
