Google launches Gears for upcoming Firefox 3

Gears 0.3 for Firefox 3 will allow users to simply create shortcuts for websites and drop them on their desktops.
Google has launched Gears 0.3 for the upcoming Firefox 3 browser. Gears, earlier known as Google Gears, is Google's ambitious open-source project to enable offline functionality for Web-based applications and services. Gears 0.3 for Firefox 3 will allow users to simply create shortcuts for websites and drop them on their desktops.
Gears consists of three components - local server for caching and serving application resources, database engine for offline data storage, and worker thread pool for background data synchronization. Basically meant to work with Web applications like Gmail or Google Docs, Gears will cache all the information from these apps and make them available offline, i.e. without network connection. Not every Web application needs to be taken offline, like your social networking profile, which would be pointless to cache.
Gears is best used for caching Web-based application services like email, documents, spreadsheets, multimedia and RSS/Atom feeds from various websites. Synchronization between website and Gears happens only with active network connection.
The bonding between Gears and Firefox is natural, both being open-source. The greatest challenge for the Gears project is incorporating compatibility with all Web browsers. Sundar Pichari, Google's president-in-charge for Gears, iGoogle, Google Desktop, Gadgets, and other Google products has said that Google is working to ensure Gears' compatibility with all major browsers on all major platforms. Yahoo! is also reportedly working on a conceptually similar project called "BrowserPlus".
Release of the final version of Firefox 3 is due on June 17, while its release candidate 3 was rolled out recently to combat some issues for the Mac platform. The soon-to-be-released Opera 9.5 desktop browser is also compatible with Gears, with Opera having announced Gears support on their desktop and mobile browsers as far back as in May.
Google is also working on Apple's Safari, which will hopefully have Java support in its Safari 4 version. Currently, Gears supports Internet Explorer and Firefox 2 with GreaseMonkey scripts on Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux platforms.
