Google Calendar and Windows Live Calendar represent starkly contrasting instances of Web 2.0's perpetual beta.
Microsoft has upgraded Windows Live Calendar, still in beta stage, with a new user interface and brand new features. The new features include setting birthday reminders for Windows Live Contacts, subscribing to public calendars (a feature that's currently facing problems) and more options for printing. Besides that, syncing Hotmail with Windows Live Calendar works perfectly in some regions. Along with that support for Internet Explorer, Opera and Firefox browsers has been upgraded.
On the other hand, Google Calendar, also in beta stage, suffered from a bug that revealed the real names of Gmail Account holders. Any Google Calendar user can view the real name of any Google Calendar invited user by hitting the back button immediately after sending the invitation. Holden Karau, a Canadian blogger, revealed that the bug worked with any account, including Gmail accounts held by private domains in Gmail's system.
These two are contemporary examples of the ups and downs in Web 2.0's perpetual beta-world. On the one hand, users test beta software and services, while on the other, spammers, phishers and hackers exploit the bugs and vulnerabilities in them.
