Gmail to Incorporate Privacy Feature

The feature will also allow users to remotely sign-out from open sessions, if any.

Gmail has introduced a new privacy feature that allows users to track and control multiple sessions in Gmail without putting a date to when it will be made available. The feature allows users to check logs containing details of account access sessions, including IP addresses and types of access (browser, mobile, POP, etc). Moreover, users can also remotely sign-out from open sessions, if any. The feature will likely be incorporated in the latest version Gmail.

With the new feature, an account's last activity information is displayed as 'recent activity' in the footer. This is meant to be an added security layer to benefit users who log into Gmail from several terminals using different modes (mobile, browser, POP). Users can thus keep tabs on any privacy intrusion that might have taken place by checking the IP addresses that are listed. The best part about the new feature is the remote sign-out option that allows users to sign out of open sessions thus preventing misuse of Gmail accounts.

With a US court already quashing Google's appeal to protect the privacy of its YouTube users, we don't know how well this new feature will fare in the future.
