Gmail Overtakes Yahoo Mail in India

Looks like Yahoo is losing its ever-so-loyal userbase

According to ViziSense, an online audience measurement and analytics provider platform, Gmail, Google's free e-mail service is now India's largest free e-mail service provider with more than 18 million users. Yahoo Mail, which held the top spot until the previous month has now been relegated to the second spot.

Yahoo Mail boasts of 16.8 million unique users and has seen its usage dip 8 percent since August this year. This, coupled with Gmail's continued growth which averaged 3 percent since August, has ensured that Gmail surpassed the number of Yahoo users in early October. Microsoft's Windows Live Mail too is seeing a surge in its userbase with it managing a very impressive 8 percent growth in India since August. Rediff Mail is at number three with 6.25 million users.

However, on the global scale, it might be a while till Gmail usurps the throne from Yahoo to be the world's largest e-mail provider. Besides, it also has another adversary to counter, Windows Live Mail from Microsoft which is right up there at number 2. As seen in a recent ComScore report, Gmail has been growing pretty fast in U.S. as well-- and unless Yahoo and Windows Mail don't do something drastic, Gmail, in its current form, will eclipse the "traditional" webmail providers in the years to come.

Incidentally, it was just last week that Yahoo carried a full front page ad across leading national dailies in India. Was this an attempt to woo its once loyal users who have started migrating to Gmail?

No doubt Gmail is making, actually it should be, it has made a dent in the user base of Yahoomail which was simply put because Yahoo was stagnant and in a way lazy with improving Yahoomail.. Gmail kind of caught them sleeping with their innovative ideas. Am a staunch yahoo supporter :) call me old school.. But the fact is Yahoomail has improved considerably and is even better than gmail in many ways.

GMail has more user accounts in india mainly because it provides mail-forward facility, and another reason is if you don't login for 6-9 months your Gmail account is still alive. I have seen people creating 1,000 to 50,000 Gmail accounts for less than 5cents/account (they just auto forward mail to another single account). People from other countries buy these accounts and use them for malicious activities. As these mail IDs are created in India, this company has counted them as India Users. If it comes to unique users, I think Yahoo is Number 1.

Yahoo had recently advertised about its new homepage look and upgraded gui for email. Till date I have never seen it. I have been yahoo user since 1998 and have only seen its quality degrading compared to Yahoo! Slowly i have started move out of my Ymail and make gmail id as primary online contact

Congrats goolge...i think there is no suprise in this. i don know what these yahoo people are doing, keeping there old boring UI instead of launching new versions of it. i think goole overtake yahoo and that day is not too far :)

GMail may be overpassing Yahoo mail in recent days but one should not forget that Yahoo Mail was started way back '98 & since been the worlds favourite web based mail service. There are a few users like me who use Yahoo mail since its inception, though today it is very useful to use GMail since its fast & very much useful I think I may continue to use both of these mail services.

Yaa this is a GREAT achievement done by GMAIL as the number of users of gmail r incresing day by day this is only because of easy and effecient service provided by GMAIL it's very to work on GMAIL rather then on yahoo and speed is also a unique feature along with the work space provided by GOOGLE is better then any other SEARCH ENGINES from my side wishes to all GOOGLE INDIA TEAM and team GMAIL...

Been using Gmail since pretty much the first few months that it was out. Was a little reluctant to move from Hotmail, but there's no turning back now. I think (personal opinion ahead) that Gmail's doing better than Yahoo and will do better than Hotmail is because Gmail is just better. (Yes, I'm a google fan boy, even though I'm sure as ever that they're going to take over the world.. Umbrella Corp anyone?

i am using email from last 7 years, initially i was using yahoo and after 3 years i started using gmail which i feel more comfortable and user friendly. lots of adds displaying on yahoo pages makes it uncomfortable to use it, it does not look or make feel that i am accessing my personal data on the page just because of lots of adds ...

I beleive main reason for, gmail taking position of yahoomail, is, at organizational level gmail is very much accessible whereas yahoomail is blocked. which limits the users accessing yahoomail.

Unless yahoo stops the spam mails it can do nothing to beat google. Yahoo should look into that. Otherwise it cant win Google mail.

greetings every one... i've been using e-mail for 7 years. my initial choice was Yahoo. Seemed to be the only mail provider with much security. I changed to GMAIL after 2 years soon after i realized the speed and security factors in it. i think yahoo has to improve its performance a lot.
