Gmail Adds SMS Sending Option to Chat

The Best of :
Gmail will add a SMS sending feature as an experimental function through Google Labs. The SMS option in Google chat can be enabled through the Google Labs function in Gmail. Currently, this feature is not available in India, not even across the Globe.
This SMS option allows sending text messages to your contact if you have their cell phone number stored in your contact list. The recipient gets a 406 area code on receiving the message sent the first time. All messages sent from the Gmail account will carry one number out of the several thousands of numbers made available by Google. The recipient can obviously save that number for future chats.
Added to that, the recipient can also reply via text message through this 406 number which makes it workable for a two way communication.
This feature is currently not available to all Gmail users. Gmail's product manager Keith Coleman told WebMonkey that it will be available to all Gmail users by Thursday evening (in US). So this feature might be available to Indians by midnight or tomorrow morning hopefully.
A similar feature was introduced for the new Yahoo Mail in August 2007 which didn't quite excite users. Hopefully, this feature works well with Gmail.
The pricing of this future service isn't known yet.
