Briefcase-sized affair can muddle GPS signals
Turns out that GPS, that wondrous bit of tech that we're pinning so much of our future on, can be fooled. We've got it in our cars, cell phones, and generally where knowing location is important, so the consequences of a wrong instruction can range from annoying to quite dire. Thankfully, we've never had to worry about that--you can't mess much with satellite signals.
And yet, the possibility of these wrong instructions has arisen, thanks to Paul Kinter, professor of electrical and computer engineering at Cornell University. Like so many discoveries, this one was accidental--Kinter and his team were working on a software-based GPS receiver when they realized that they could use that software to cook up and transmit fake GPS signals.
To start fooling GPS receivers, the device just needs to be in the vicinity. First, it'll send the same GPS signals that it receives from the satellites. GPS receivers in the area will lock on to this signal, because it's the strongest available. Once it's drawn nearby receivers into its web, it can start transmitting whatever you want it to.
