Remember the good old days of the ViewMaster? For ye who are too young to comprehend, the ViewMaster was what you used when you wanted to be "immersed" in a bunch of 3D photos, ranging from shots of Disneyland to Alice in Wonderland. It's available even now, but it's just an analog toy, and only kids could possibly see any attraction to it. That, however, is set to change.
At the Photokina imaging festival in Germany this week, Fujifilm showed off its new FinePix Real 3D system, which uses two camera lenses to shoot stereo images that you don t need ViewMasters or 3D glasses to enjoy. Acting like it's two digital cameras in one, the system takes two photos simultaneously and then uses a Real Photo (RP) processor to combine them into one 3D image. You will have to print the photo on a "3D sheet" to soak in all the goodness, though.
That's not all, either--there's plenty of fun to be had with a two-lens camera. It could take some awesome panoramic shots, what with it having the fields of view of two lenses at its disposal. You'll also be able to record video with one lens and take high-resolution photographs with the other--perfect for those moments when a snapshot of your holiday video just won't do.
We ought to see a camera based on the system some time next year, so we must sit tight for now.
