First Custom Firmware for Nintendo Wii Out

Using the Twilight Princess hack, the first custom firmware for the Nintendo Wii was just released

The first custom firmware for the Nintendo Wii has just been released, Slashdot reports. The firmware is also the first emulator to read Writeable DVDs on an unmodified Wii. This hack is built upon a chink in the Wii armour caused by a security hole in the Wii game Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. This hole allows one to run home-made programs on the Wii, dubbed "homebrew". Some of the programs users have successfully ran on the Wii include Tetris and an SNES emulator. The current version will also allow programs to run off a DVD; previously an SD card was the only medium of launching homebrew apps. You can find out more about the hack at this Mahalo page.
