Firefox 3.0 Beats Firefox 2.0 Record

Firefox 3.0 Beats Firefox 2.0 Record

Techtree News Staff, Jun 18, 2008 1900 hrs IST

Mozilla claims the newest iteration of its browser allows for fast, secure, and easy-to-customize Internet surfing.

Congratulatory cake delivered to Mozilla, Microsoft's IE (Internet Explorer) team might want to eat this!

Five odd hours into the release of Mozilla's latest "Firefox 3" Internet browser, and the newbie seems to have garnered as many as 1.6 million downloads -- a number its predecessor 'Firefox 2' saw only at the end of one whole day, claim developers of Firefox 3. The opening hours alone recorded as many as 9,000 free copies being distributed on a per minute basis. Downloads continued well into the next day with Mozilla rallying support of its fans in trying to break an all new Guinness World Record for the largest number of software downloads in 24 hours -- a difficult but not impossible task.

Possibly the same kind of enthusiasm was responsible for a delayed release earlier on Tuesday when traffic to the Mozilla Web site (http://www.getfirefox.com) overwhelmed Firefox Web servers causing the Web site to crash and remain slow or worse - unreachable - for a good two hours. Free downloads of Firefox 3 began only after the problem was solved.

About Firefox 3: Mozilla claims the newest iteration of its browser allows for fast, secure, and easy-to-customize Internet surfing. Firefox 3 is being made available in 50 languages, and according to Mozilla, is "at least twice as fast as its predecessor" besides boasting "15,000 improvements" that include malware protection. Firefox 3 is available as a free download for computers running Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X operating systems.

Since the launch of the very first Firefox in November of 2004, Mozilla claims the browser has spread to over 175 million users and 230 coutries, so much so that it now comes a close second to Microsoft's ubiquitous Internet Explorer. Although many would counter that saying Firefox is the best!

I loved ff2. I'm not very happy with 3, but I can't find a ff2 download to save my life. Maybe I have an installer saved somewhere. My phishing protection thing doesn't work with 3, and neither do the add ons. They worked with 2 though. Just why would you eliminate all the ff2 downloads off your page? pushing some new crap down my throat is how I ended up with GRRRR vista... just because I wanted a new pc. thanks for choosing for us, you jerkholes.

I like my Firefox, BUT, in 3, I am a bit disappointed as my RealPlayer Add on to download any movie doesn't work on it. It says it is "Incompatible with this version" So, I will need to go back to 2 because it worked fine. Also, Download embedded is not updated yet. sucks. Other than that, I didn't notice a speed difference at all... if not a slight drop in speed.

I quite agree with Gregg about IE being faster then Firefox.Esp here in India. I would like sceptics to come over here to India and try out both IE as well as Firefox.Firefox may work better, faster and more efficently in the latest versions of laptops and computors available there in USA and other advanced countries but here in India where a majority of peaple are using machines 2 to 3 years old or even older still,it is IE which is winning hands down on all fronts, esp its ease of operation which a 10 year old too can use. Have you even vaguely seen the security in IE7. Stop being a sycophant and actually learn about both sides and write something resembling the truth.

Firefox's "tabbed browsing" was present in the first version, which was released in 2004. IE's first instance of "tabbed browsing" was IE7, released in July of 2005 Predating both of these is Phoenix's "Tabbed browsing" released in 2002 Phoenix is Firefox -2

I have used FireFox 1, 2 & now 3. But I have to say I ALWAYS go back to IE. FireFox is a step backwards from IE. It is much slower and far less technically advanced. As a matter of fact I find it quite backwards. IE has had "Tab Browsing" for many years, but FireFox 3 just started. Additionally, FireFox 3 is very combersome to use and NOT at all intuitive. Opening a new Tab is difficult, and once you do that it is near impossible to find anything. As far as I am concerned FireFox 3 is more like FoxSh*t

Greg, Im sorry your not smart enough to work firefox...my 80 yr old grandmother can open new tabs and find everything she needs...unlike when using IE7. And you also think FF3 is slower than IE7? either your on drugs or a covert MS rep.

What are you smoking?

i got to agree with bill on that one.... you must be on drugs or an M$ rep...i mean diffuicult to open a tap? you should have tried the "new tab" option under file...and when the new tab is opened to find something why not try a google search? or is that to difficult to use as well?

I`m thouroughtly impressed with Firefox 3.0 .It runs much faster than 2.0 with less drain on resources I see many PC Editors warn don`t do it ,let other find all the problems.I have a feeling that they have found all but maybe a handful of very minor problems and those are really nothing compared to the to the big blue Exploder with its many security holes ...still. Not to mention the spam generated from it . Been there done it If it were up to me Bill and his gang of banditos calling themselves programmers would be left 100 miles in the desert naked and one bottle of water . Im takin bets they wouldnt make it a mile

In my opinion Firefox 3 is 100 times better and anything Microsoft has to offer.

Firefox IS the best. the only reason m$'s internet explorer is on top (that will change soon) is because it is bundled with windows. lots of people actually think the big blue "e" on their desktop is actually the internet. ive had to explain many times to people that it is NOT the internet and that it is the software used to view and interact with the internet..anyway it is plainly obvious that more and more people are aware and firefox will rule the web for sometime to come....

Your contribution shows that the development of this technology provides an important condition for direct democratic world governance doing away with the current fraudulent and indirect forms purporting to be democratic. Computer literacy for all and computer equipment for all ! Of course it is necessary to clear the otherobstacle that stand in the way.
