Rumours point to 'coming soon'
Latest market buzz seems to point towards Microsoft (finally) adopting Blu-ray for its Xbox 360 console -- at least as an add-on option for its customers. While Microsoft has in the past expressed it readiness to include a Blu-ray disc (BD) player add-on to the Xbox should there be enough demand, Toshiba has always remained against any such adoption post the HD-DVD debacle.
Which is what makes the following interesting: Guess who Microsoft has seemingly contracted to manufacture BD players for them? Toshiba-Samsung Storage technology Corp, a joint venture between Samsung Electronics and Toshiba Corp. The venture will build BD players for future Xboxes. The device is expected to be priced at around the $100-$150 price bracket to remain competitive against the PS3.
Microsoft too remains very unenthusiastic as far as BD is concerned -- partly due to the fact that Sony is reluctant to adopt Microsoft's HDi technology, which is pitted against Sony's BD Java. Both are interactive technologies. With Blu-ray finally winning the format war, Microsoft has to offer a Blu-ray option with their console at some point of time to remain competitive against the already BD-capable PS3.
