Esquire to Use E-Ink for Cover

Esquire to Use E-Ink for Cover

The legendary mens' magazine is bringing out its 75th anniversary special edition with a high tech cover designed by E Ink.

Esquire, the men's magazine from Hearst Corporation is about to celebrate its 75th anniversary. The magazine is known for its strong literary tradition and was famous for flourishing even during the Great Depression.

In what could be seen as an attempt to break off from the traditional, laid-back, literary image, the magazine is all set to launch its 75th anniversary edition. So what is so interesting about this edition?

Well, for a change, the Esquire cover will be one of the very high tech covers to grace newsstands this autumn. The publishers reportedly spent a fat six-figure amount to create a flashing cover with the text "The 21st Century Begins Now".

David Granger, Esquire's Editor-In-Chief, while showing prototypes of the cover in a recent interview said, "I hope it will be in the Smithsonian". Pointing to the prototype sitting on a conference room table, Mr. Granger said, "The possibilities of print have just begun. In two years, I hope this looks like cellphones did in 1982, or car phones."

Apparently, the flashing cover idea has a long history behind it. It was back in 2000 when the technology was first showcased by E Ink, a company that specializes in this. Then two years ago, the project was revived and the 75th anniversary idea was finalized.

The batteries, which will sit under the cover, and the display case are manufactured and put together in China. They are then shipped to Texas and then on to Mexico, where the device is inserted by hand into each magazine. The issues will then be shipped via trucks, which will be refrigerated to preserve the batteries, to the magazine's distributor.

The electronic cover will be used in only 100,000 copies that go to newsstands - its overall circulation is about 720,000.
