Scroll down for the rest of the story.

While we all await the release of the iPhone 3G in India, some questions are pressing. In many ways, the iPhone is a platform - a means and a tool to unlock far greater features through new and sundry software. Until recently, the only means of installing software not produced by Apple was through illegal avenues. Now though, with the launch of the App Store, Apple has brought third-party software under a legal umbrella. Thus, the first question is this: will we, in India, get access to the same App Store that the people in the U.S. and other western countries enjoy? Further, would pricing be in Rupees or would we need to pay in Dollars? What about 3G - a feature so central to the iPhone that it's part of its name, its identity - will the iPhone be released along with 3G coverage?

To put it simply, will the iPhone offer the same value proposition in India, as it does abroad? We try and answer some of these burning questions here in this TechTree exclusive.

We contacted the necessary parties at Apple, Vodafone and Airtel - the latter being iPhone's official carriers in India - to get the required answers. While Apple and Vodafone were tight-lipped about release details, we struck gold with Airtel. Our source at Airtel, who wishes to remain anonymous, gave us valuable insight. Most of it, good news.

According to our source, the iPhone 3G will bring along most of the software goodies that are available in the West. In fact, the source went on to add, some of the features will be customized to suit the Indian tariff. The source confirmed that we would also be able to purchase software from the App Store with a possibly of a revised price for the Indian consumer, quickly adding that the price revision is not set in stone.

Let's move on to the meat of the matter - when will the iPhone be available in India?

When I last spoke to our source from Airtel, I was told that the iPhone 3G launch was scheduled for the 25th of August, with the caveat that the date may be pushed to early September for supply reasons. Apparently, the number of pre-orders for the iPhone have exceeded the initial product allotment by Apple.

Interestingly, our source from Airtel confirmed that Vodafone will be the first to introduce the iPhone 3G in India, with a 15-day launch advantage over Airtel, thanks to Vodafone's global tie-ups. If we are to believe Airtel, Vodafone should introduce the iPhone 3G by end of August at least. That's only a month from now!

So does this mean Vodafone will get to gorge on the subscription of maximum number of iPhone-hungry Indians due to the company's first-in-line advantage? Is the iPhone 3G is likely to become a "Vodafone product"?

One would obviously like to think so, but Airtel differs on this aspect. Our source assertively stated that Vodafone hasn't been able to create the kind of impact on the prospective iPhone buyers as Airtel has with its aggressive marketing. The latter added, "We will make sure we don t downplay them (Vodafone), but we will create an impact of our own."

There has been a lot of speculation over the price of the iPhone. Initially, only the 8 GB version of the iPhone 3G will be officially launched in India. The handset is expected to cost between Rs. 11,500 and Rs. 12,000, says our source. Compare this to the $199 price tag of the 8GB version in the U.S, and it's obvious that India is once again going to feel the import-duty pinch. Moreover, this price does not include the data plan costs that a user will have to bear every month, the details of which will only be out by the 15th of August, our source indicated. There are still deliberations being made on the specifics of the plan, we were told.

If you want the iPhone 3G right away, you need to look to the grey market. The scene there isn't all rosy though, with rumors flying of Airtel and Vodafone clamping down on parallel imports. The market-reality seemed to lend credence to these rumors as most vendors we contacted told us that the iPhone (old model or new) was unavailable for purchase. One Mr. Munshi Adnan, owner of a shop called "Gadgets" at Heera Panna, in Mumbai, promises to offer the iPhone 3G next week. He claimed to have it around July 28th, and quoted a princely sum of Rs. 40,000 to Rs. 50,000!

While all of the above is largely good news, the bad news comes in the garb of the key feature: 3G. Nobody seemed willing to place a date on 3G availability in India, the arrival of which is still a rather nebulous 'sometime late this year'. We have a bad feeling about this. Our source did confirm though that GPS (a feature through which the iPhone 3G can track your location) would be a present in the Indian avatar of the Apple iPhone 3G.

So there you have it! Mostly good news for those of us who have waited for the release date of this product.

U dont really need 3G from day one, as unless u are a technie , 3G drains the battery very fast. These range of phones generally can switch between GSM and 3G so that voice calls makes no difference. I have never noticed a difference with GPRS too, 3G is here in Aus for quite a long time but ppl are still happy with GSM and GPRS. Video calls need 3G

I think the proce for th ephone would be somewhere in the range of 20k. The reason for this is that the call charges abroad are much higher than the call charges here in india, its about 1 or 2 cents here as compared to 5-6 cents in the west. Th Iphone costs about 173$ post production, AT&T buys it for a little above 300$. AT&T has increased their monthly rental by 10$ and their is a 2 year contract, plus the call charges are high. All these factors compromise on the low cost, whereas in INDIA, the other former 2 factors are possible, but the latter is a big concern. So to make up for that the cost of this amazing phone would be increased and would be around 20k.

by abhay krishan r, pune, on Jul 27, 2008 09:21 AM, Report abuse   Reply

The iPhone will cost around 20k alright. But, how can you convert the call charges in India to dollars and say that the call charges here are 1 or 2 cents? If you are in US and earning in $, then I don't think 5 cents is "high".

This is indeed great news.. but I have a couple of questions I hope can be answered. 1) When will the 16gb model be available and for how much? 2) Will the phones be locked to the particular carrier you purchase it from? I have a Mumbai Vodafone number and a Bangalore Airtel one, and i'd like to be able to use either SIM card in my iPhone whenever I want... Is that going to be possible? Any answers appreciated. Thanks

by Mogambo, Bangalore, on Jul 23, 2008 02:54 PM, Report abuse   Reply

Please wait for Iphone to launch to get the info ! If this scoop is true, then it will be locked and you would be unable to use another SIM. Please contact Vodafone to find out when the 16 GB version will arrive.

by Brendon, Mumbai, on Jul 23, 2008 03:08 PM, Report abuse

1) 16 GB version will not available this year at all, first they study the 8 gb sales and launch 16GB it may be 6 months late than 8gb. All over world 16gb is having very shortage ofcourse 8gb too

I just calculeted about the price of iphone and it seems that it could be just $399 to $499.. As many of you know Airtel is not going to subsadize the iphone but vofdfone has not conformed this... NOW calculation... 1.around $330 to buy from the apple (cost for airtel) 2. 5% import dutuy = $16.5 3. If Airtel and vodafone takes around $75 for adv., selling and other stuff i.e more then Rs 3000 which is quite big for this things.. so taotal cost = $300+16.5+75 = $391.5 Hence anyone can say that it will not exceed the price tag of $449 to $499 i.e around RS 19500 to RS21500

by Ritesh, chittaranjan, on Jul 30, 2008 02:19 PM, Report abuse   Reply

I agree with abhay krishan r, plus when we all usually find the post-paid bills over charged and with iphone it becomes obvious that the network carriers would be looking to recover the phone cost, marketing cost, service revenue and eventually profit so I feel that if they go for a contract which unfortunately has a 80% possibility it would be a really bad move, as atleast 40% of market share consists of college youth which wont be able to afford it. And if the case be I might be one of those who will unlock it and by whatever way escape the contract because I just cant pay so much just to have a phone! Its better if they keep the price at around 20k. Plus, keep in mind that apple is known for selling its products on high price, of course they are highest in the quality.

But the buzz is that iphone 3G will cost above 20k...how far this news is true??

by Pankaj, Mumbai, on Jul 23, 2008 01:11 PM, Report abuse   Reply

Its definetely going to cost Rs.28000-32000 for an unsecured version. The secured version might cost anywhere between 11000-16000. Lets hope it releases by early next month. I am going to pick up one, even if it costs 15000 for secure or 28000 for unsecured iPhpone

by iphoneindiablog, Bangalore, on Jul 23, 2008 05:15 PM, Report abuse

I just dont get wgat all the fuss about pricing is. When the N95 just came out, i bought it for 28000. But the printed price was 38000. I bought it from a Nokia Priority dealer. It costed 38000 even in Europe. The markets in the west are about phones costing less and the telecom coys making a killing with their high priced rentals, wooing the customer to the trap with highend phones in seemingly lesser prices. But India is a market of volume sales. Contract rentals have never worked. It was tried by a famous telecom operator here, but they failed miserably. Come on guys, the highest rental you can pay in India is rs 1000 right now (BSNL rates)....and thats 23 dollars a month !!! Compared to the 500 to 1000 dollars a month rental in america. If the iphone should be any close to a hit in India, then the prices have to be that low....and contract free. We, luckily for us, live in a country that has the lowest telephone fares in the world....on telephones that cost the least in the world comparitively :) Doesnt that make you proud :) Mostly to check smugling, i guess we will have our own exclusive IMEI number series, which might not be able to be activated in any other part of the world. I bet a month's salary that iTunes already has an IP tracker inbuilt in it, which will detect your IP address to know from where you are activating it. Good Lord just cant wait for it. 12K or 25K i am getting one....waited too long for it......too long...

12000 rupees! Are you joking? Even ipod touch 8GB sells around Rs 16000. All Apple products are expensive, and they are more so in India. And if the carrier is not going to subsidize it, then how on earth will it cost 12k? Carriers can't offer it so cheap. Remember no 3G yet in India meaning there will be limitations on offering expensive data plans? How expensive can voice plans be? I think the price will be no less than 18000/-

a locked phone is 'locked' to a particular carrier. so if you buy an iphone from airtel, for example, you cannot use a sim card from any other carrier with that phone. an unlocked phone will allow you to use any mobie service with your iphone. hope that helped you siddharth

Impossible! Just check the Vodafone New Zealand website. iPhone 8GB without contract is $979 (Rs. 30,700), $549 (Rs. 17,200) with monthly cost $80 (Rs. 2500) and $449 (Rs. 14,000) with monthly cost of $130 (Rs. 4075). These are the 3 options you have. How can it be Rs 12,000 in India? http://www.vodafone.co.nz/iphone/8gb-black.jsp

Is there possibility of buying Apple Iphone 3G in US or Uk and then unlocking it in India.. Shall we use the phone?? Will be there any problem arising out of it?

by Sanjeev, Chennai, on Jul 23, 2008 01:17 PM, Report abuse   Reply

Yes you can !!! Many people have done it in the past. However please note that the $199 price is a subsidised price with a heavy monthly data plan charge. For that you have to be a citizen of UK and have a permanent address. If you want to buy it without a network operator, the cost should be somewhere near $599.

by Brendon, Mumbai, on Jul 23, 2008 01:38 PM, Report abuse

You can buy unlocked iPhones in Europe, but the cost is ~ 550 EUR. You shouldn't have trouble using the unlocked phone in India, but if you buy the subsidised phone, you will need to activate the data plan in the store itself. If you're willing to pay the charges on that plan along with whatever you may pay for an Indian service, you should be fine.

Hi Friends, I believe 3G iPhone price will be around 20k for 8GB and 30k for 16GB. Main problem is still no 3G announcement from any service provider so data plan will be high and slow as well. Better wait for some more time and watch.

If you already have an iPhone, just unlock it and use it with any carrier, either ways Vodafone will not support anything which hasn't been purchased with their own terms and conditions, probably these carriers will have a contract too. Let's wait and watch for what happens.

I did not expect that there are newbs reporter for your website!! Please confirm it through a confirmed sources... Or you will end up breaking lot of hearts :'(

by Nishit Jogani, Mumbai, on Jul 23, 2008 02:12 PM, Report abuse   Reply

I'm willing to bet that both Airtel and Vodafone have already placed, confirmed and paid for their stocks well in advance. This means they won't have to worry about the shortage that Apple is currently facing in the US, and can launch on target. In fact, Vodafone can easily divert some units from their international stocks to support Indian demand. It is not impossible for Airtel and Vodafone to subsidise the phone in India. Sure, there are caps on how much of the subsidy can be passed onto the customer, but that won't be a problem for a country where the volumes will easily make up for low margins. It sounds like this reporter has talked to a reasonably well-informed source. But nothing's written in stone. The iPhone will be expensive for buyers at the end of the day, no matter how you calculate the costs.

HI guys, there is a news on google from CNET... iPhone 3G on sale in 20 more countries on August 22, 2008 Jul 23, 2008 13:33 Apple just announced this week at its quarterly financial conference call with investors that the iPhone 3G will go on sale in 20 more countries on August 22, 2008. That came in the midst of iPhone 3G shortages all over US. Really makes me wonder how it's gonna boost production to meet the additional demand. No word as to which 20 countries will be that lucky, but they'll surely be coming from that list of 50 under the "Coming Soon" header on the Apple iPhone page, link here. Among the list are countries like the Philippines, Macau, Singapore and India from Asia. Think they'll get it? Keep your fingers crossed if you're from any of the above countries and wish for it to happen soon. Check Apple's iPhone page for updates.

I guess you need to check the quarterly financial report of Apple where the CFO says that they are planning to launch the 3G in another 20 countries on 22nd August 2008.

iPhone at 11500 Rs in India ?? Sweet dreams, techtree... A place where people don't even pay their phone bills properly, airtel/vodafone are not idiots to subsidize iPhone and target the money to be recovered as high monthly bills !!

i dont know why some people with no markjet sense comment on the topics just because they have easy money to spent on .ipod was once >20000 , now its nearing 13000 ..... then its marketing strategy nothin more .....it wil come around 11000 - 12000 only for 8 gb model....

I feel this could be a possibility. Since address verification and documentation is necessary for Postpaid connections, Vodafone may be able to block the Iphones IMEI number if the customer unlocks the phone and goes to another carrier rendering the Iphone useless.

There a lot things that are done in the name of address verification. If I remember correctly, all Reliance phones which were post paid connections had address verifications done, even then auto-wallas had that 500 bux phone And yes , iPod's price point doesn't matter. Thats just a one time payment. iPhone plans to recover the instrument cost in post paid plans and thats why the subsisdy Also, they may be able to block the phone using IMEI incase a person un-locks it. Even then they can only make sure that customer doesn't use his iPhone but they still are at loss All said and done , if its priced 11.5k here with a monthly rental < 300 (including 3g ) its going to be the best deal. But, i have the gut feeling that the contract is going to cost >450/month

> i dont know why some people > by NITIN from CHENNai Dear friend, have you heard of something called bill of materials? (BOM) BOM for iphone is $400+ at this time. How will they sell the phone for 199 if the carrier is not subsidizing it?

by sandy, bangalore, on Jul 23, 2008 03:44 PM, Report abuse

if by BOM you mean manufacturing cost, then the actual cost of manufacturing to apple is $173!

wow great news! i'm not really concerned abt 3G right now even though it's a major feature. The main thing for me is the innovative touch interface and multimedia capabilities.

It will launch by next month and it's confirmed through other sources. I am more concerned on the data plan, as an everage AT&T plan is 70$ per month which is close to Rs 2800, will indian customer will be ready for it?

Forget about the price guys. Lets see whether iphone launch in next month or not

I thinks its a waste to buy an Iphone(Rather any phone) in a contract with your service provider. Its like the phone is not yours, you taking it on rent. What i feel is to buy an Iphone w/o a contract and use as you wish. May be that's why i never liked to have a CDMA phone.

I really don't know how this is good news when you will be paying a hefty 1000 bucks on the data plan anyways. (Most likely more). If they were offering it at around 20k for the 8 GB version without a data plan, then it would be better since you would be able to subscribe to a cheaper data plan and save money in the long run.

by Brendon, Mumbai, on Jul 23, 2008 01:44 PM, Report abuse   Reply

I preregistered with both Airtel and Vodafone. Who ever offers it first, i will buy it. I don't mind changing my number to Vodafone... 11500 Rs in India for 8GB Model...??? Your Airtel contact person would be wrong. I dont think iPhone can be subsidized in India (Blackberry subsidization did not work!). I am ready to pay anywhere up to 20000 Rs for the 8GB contract/no-contract plan.
