Dual-GPU Radeon HD 4850 & 4870 Cards Announced

According to AMD, the 4870 X2 is the world's fastest card, targeted at visual computing, HD experience and super-high end gaming.
AMD has announced dual-GPU versions of ATI Radeon HD 4850 & 4870 cards for the 'upper high end' market. The dual-GPU versions are referred as Radeon HD 4850 X2 and HD 4870 X2 are available for shipping for $399 and $599 respectively. According to AMD, the 4870 X2 is the world's fastest card, delivering 2.4 teraFLOPs of processing power exploitable for visual computing, HD experience and super-high end gaming. Both these dual-GPU cards will compete with Nvidia's GeForce GTX 260/280 respectively.
"Targeted at the 'super high end' market, the cards will be focused more on performance, which will justify its high price," said Neal Robinson, Director of Global ISV for AMD. As per AMD's claim, the HD 4870 X2 will offer 80% more performance than HD 4870 (single-GPU) despite being priced higher than low-end computers.
The frequency and memory interface on the X2 cards appears to be the same as on the single-GPU cards. The HD Radeon 4850 X2 runs at a 625-MHz core clock and has 900-MHz GDDR-3 memory interface. While the HD Radeon 4870 X2 sprints at a 750-MHz core clock and has a 900-MHz GDDR-5 memory interface offering 80% more bandwidth than GDDR-3. The overclockable model is touted to come with GPU clock-speed of 780MHz, which crosses the clock-speed of the 4870 X2 model by 30MHz. Each card can have frame buffer memory up to 2 GB.
In terms of power consumption, each dual-GPU card has power-management technology to scale down power consumption whenever cards are idle. Corresponding to that, HD 4850 X2 utilizes 230 watts for peak performance, while HD 4870 X2 uses 280 watts.
The low-end single-GPU HD 4850 is priced between $100-200 while HD 4870 is priced between $200-400. So the new dual-GPU cards will be above this range, around $400-600 for the ultra-high end market.
