Many of us were disappointed when Steve Jobs didn't mention anything about the presence of a camera on the iPad at the time of its unveiling last week. However, of late, there is new evidence pointing towards the Apple iPad getting a front camera. If not the current version, then definitely a later version of it.
This latest rumor has its origins from multiple sources. The rumors started off with the news that Mission Repair fixer of Apple products reportedly received a shipment of iPad spare parts including the metal frame which has an opening for a camera lens. If that wasn't enough proof, there are indications of the presence of a camera module inside the iPad. At least the software part of it seems to be camera ready. A screen shot taken from an iPad OS emulator shows that it clearly gives the user an option to Use an existing picture or take a new picture inside the contacts menu. Now, if the iPad is not supposed to have a camera, how do we take the picture? At the same time, if there is a digital camera accessory for the iPad that might explain it. But then, these are just possibilities.
There have been crude (but effective) attempts too from people to figure out if there is a camera on board the iPad. Take, for example, the case of Charlie Sorrel from Wired who has magnified a photograph from the official iPad launch event to check if there really is a camera at the top of the iPad.
My best guess? It was a last-minute addition that did not, at the time of the conference, have a completed software solution. If they can't demo it to you, they won't talk about it. That's how Apple works.
