DivX beefing up project for faster decoding

DivX has been working hard to bring high-definition H.264 support for their products for Windows. The H.264's video compression standard provides high-quality video output and is equivalent to MPEG-4 Part 10 or MPEG-4 AVC. For optimal video quality, H.264 uses more CPU and GPU power, which has pushed the GPU majors Nvidia and ATI to include H.264 decoding support on their graphics cards to reduce load on the CPU.

With the codename Project Remoulade, DivX had rolled out DivX H.264 decoder with three beta releases so far, which competes with the CoreAVC decoder, claimed to be the world's fastest low-cost decoder. DivX is thus beefing up the project for faster decoding as compared to the CoreCodec and free ffdshow decoder.

The DivX player 7.0 Beta 1, the first DivX player to handle H.264 video, also includes multi-channel surround sound AAC audio format support. Moreover, MKV (Matroska) files can be used to pack H.264 and AAC audio tracks for supporting multiple audio as well as subtitle options in a single container. The 7.0 Beta 1 also includes DirectShow filters-the H.264 decoder filter and the DivX MKV Demux filter-for the MKV container (having a H.264 video track and AAC audio tracks) playback support to all other DirectShow-based media players. Check out what more is available on the DivX Player 7.0 Beta 1 here.

The MKV file format is gradually becoming the mp3 for videos and is replacing the AVI format due to high video quality. The DivX Player 7.0 Beta 1 is being compared to the current VLC media player, which had offered H.264 playback support a long time ago. However, DivX offers commercial support and, of course, promises faster decoding with appropriate hardware.

The H.264 is seen as an open standard and is used for platforms like Broadcast, Internet Streaming, Video on Mobile, and DVD players. Big media giants like Adobe, Corel, Sonic, Sony, Panasonic, and many others are including H.264 file support in their software and hardware offerings. Keeping that in mind, DivX had acquired MainConcept last November for $22 million to dabble in the H.264 codec business. With Project Remoulade, DivX will integrate MainConcept's H.264 technology into its products and make it available to the semiconductor majors.
