Forensic experts unveil new crime-fighting technique
The ubiquitous little camera can be an excellent crime-buster tool as well if forensic experts suspect it to be used for criminal activities. These cameras can provide investigators details regarding how or when the photographs were taken.
If you thought EXIF data provides these anyway, be warned that EXIF data can be easily manipulated with. The new technique can be used to track typical cases like hostage crisis and activities which use photography as a medium of spreading terror or to pass on news.
Forensic experts can gather a wealth of information by simply analyzing the pixels of the photographs. The reason for this is that each camera generates distinct pixels that share an unique relationship between its neighboring pixels. Call it a modern fingerprinting technique where each make or model has its own "pattern" Using this pattern, investigators can easily identify the make of the camera and a whole lot of other information.
With cameras usually having a shelf life of 18 months it will help investigators to track down the place from where it was bought from - and when. While this is not something very significant, these should help a great deal especially when investigators have no evidence or lead to hang on to.
