Earlier this year, (Electronic Arts) EA-owned developer Pandemic Studios revealed starting work on a new game based on JRR Tolkien's treatise, 'The Lord of the Rings' (LOTR).
Nothing much else was disclosed except that "The Lord of the Rings: Conquest" would draw upon the much-acclaimed movie adaptations by Peter Jackson. Apart from that, Pandemic just about managed to say that more details would arrive in the 'very near future'.
And so they have... with publisher EA revealing that "The Lord of the Rings: Conquest" will arrive on the Xbox 360, PS3, PC, and Nintendo DS sometime this fall. That in a departure from EA's earlier handling of LOTR games essentially based on LOTR movies, Pandemic's treatment will give players control over both sides of the conflict -- be it fighting for men, elves, dwarves, or even Sauron and his evil forces. The game will feature the action across huge battlefields and give gamers the opportunity to handle a variety of characters such as the Oliphaunts, the Balrog, and Sauron himself, to name a few.
Nearly 150 characters promise to appear on the screen at any given time with multiplayer melees with as many as 16 players. There would be four-player split-screens for both competitive and co-operative game play.
Incidentally the third project in development at Pandemic Studios, more information on "The Lord of the Rings: Conquest" can be found at the just-launched Web site for the game.
