Dell Inspiron Mini 9 Launched

After Asus and HP, it's Dell's turn to plunge into the netbook segment with the Inspiron Mini 9.
After Asus and HP launched their netbooks into the mini-laptop market, rumors about Dell joining the competition cropped up. Well, Dell has launched Inspiron Mini 9 netbook in the US. The Inspiron Mini 9 will be available with Windows XP Home for $399 and Ubuntu Linux for $349, which will be available at a later date. Besides that the Linux flavor comes with 2GB online storage at Box.net for free.
Dell surprisingly doesn't mention about the integrated 3G card. The Inspiron Mini 9 features 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270, Intel 965 Chipset, upto 1GB DDR2 533MHz RAM, 4/8/16 GB SSD storage, Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950, 8.9-inch LED display (1024x600), Wireless 802.11g card, Bluetooth, and 32-W/hr 4-cell battery. Check out more details and upgrade options here. The physical dimensions of Inspiron Mini 9 are vaguely reminiscent of the Eee PC 900.
For those who'd go for Linux-flavored Mini 9, the offer of 2GB free storage space online with Box.net is expandable to 25GB. Also, John Thode, Vice President and General Manager for small screen devices at Dell said that Inspiron Mini 9 with an integrated 3G radio would be announced in couple of weeks.
With such a price and configuration, Inspiron Mini 9 could be a good competition for Asus Eee PC, Acer Aspire One, MSI wind and other netbook models in the Indian market. It would be interesting to see if Dell ties up with any telecom service provider for the support and services of the integrated 3G chip.

This looks like a good buy at around Rs 16,000 to Rs 20,000/- Buying an Asus Eepc or Acer Power One for Rs 23,000/- is still not that great as you can get a better standard size notebook from various manufacturer. The day these small notebooks are sold at $100 - $200 tag, that would be an era of its own.
