The Ministry of Defence has taken steps to ensure that military secrets are not leaked out through social networking Web site, Orkut. This, the ministry has informed Parliament.

Defence Minister, A K Antony, said in a written statement that defence personnel is periodically sensitized to the nuances of military security, and to the implications of sharing classified information with strangers on social networks.

He categorically pointed out that no report pertaining to the involvement of any defence personnel in the sharing of classified defence information on social networking sites has been brought to light yet.

However, that directives have been issued to take stern action against defaulters who use the Internet for passing-on state secrets.

Antony went on to detail the steps being taken to ensure that foreign intelligence agencies do not gain hold of the country's military secrets through Internet. These include: sensitization of defence and civilian personnel at all levels; regular policy guidelines for compliance; and checks/audits by in-house teams to locate any breach.
