id Software releases DOOM for iPhone and will bring three Quake games as well
Back in March, id Software's ace game programmer and co-founder John Carmack had released port of their classic action game Wolfenstein 3D. And now, the mastermind has given a green signal for DOOM Resurrection to hit iPhone platform through the Apple App Store. Priced at $9.99 (Rs. 480 approx.), DOOM Resurrection is one of the action packed and technologically advanced chapter from the legendary arena-based First Person Shooter game - DOOM.
DOOM Resurrection has been developed by Escalation Studios under the supervision of Carmack. In order to create something different than an average iPhone shooter with controls on the screen itself, Escalation made use of iPhone's built-in accelerometer. So, iPhone OS based devices owners will have to tilt their devices and then shoot.
Carmack noted that the DOOM Resurrection game had faster loading and run timing on new iPhone 3GS. So, the experience of the game will totally depend on the iPhone OS device one owns. However, it should be noted that iPod Touch 2G has faster CPU speed than first generation iPhone or iPod Touch and the iPhone 3GS.
Also, DOOM Classic is going to arrive in App Store soon as per the notice at the id Software website. Apart from that, the company plans to bring three of its Quake titles to iPhone platform as well. However, Carmack might not be heavily involved in these projects. Carmack told Shacknews, "I may need to go in there and make sure certain specific things are done the way I want them to be." Let's hope that all three new Quake games look graphically enhanced just like DOOM Resurrection, especially on the iPhone 3GS since it has OpenGL ES 2.0 support.
After dominating the first person arena-based shooter genre on the PC platform, id Software is keen toward the iPhone as gaming platform.
