'Customer Care', Reliance Style [Opinion]

Reliance Customer Care is filled with incompetent, ill-informed, evil, sadistic trolls -- My experience with Reliance Broadnet

Reliance Customer Care is filled with incompetent, ill-informed, evil sadistic trolls. I congratulate them for destroying what would have been an otherwise decent service.

After listening to well over three hours of phone music spread out over twenty phone calls, I have accepted defeat. This gang of sadists have probably been trained by the CIA in advanced interrogation and torture techniques, and short of water boarding, I cannot think of a better way of inflicting abuse on a fellow human being. How do they sleep at night?! Dear reader, let me recount their sadistic ways.

1. Making me spell out my name, address, customer ID, then making me listen to phone music, and then just dropping the call. (On more than one occasion)

2. Making me spell out my name, address, customer ID, then transferring me to another executive who asks me to repeat the same information all over again.

3. Arbitrarily putting me on their Speed-Select (90 paise/MB) plan by default, when I had made it very clear that I wanted the 400 Kbps unlimited plan.

4. Telling me that the 300 Kbps is the best speed I can get, and that the Unlimited plan is unavailable because I opted for their landline phone along with my broadband service.

5. Finally backtracking on 4) and asking for three days to change my plan from Speed Select to 300 kbps Unlimited.

6. Three days later after 5) being told that I am still on the speed select plan, and that it will take 168 hours, i.e. seven working days to change my plan.

7. Being told that only one PC can use the Internet connection at a time. No internet connection sharing. No wireless networking for you at home, how dare you make such unreasonable requests.

8. System is down/being upgraded/can't find your details/etc.

If it weren't for the help of other forum users on Indiabroadband.net, I wouldn't have been able to Wi-Fi my Internet connection. It's pretty easy once you have the know how, but this information is completely undocumented.

Apart from Customer Care, the single biggest hassle with Reliance Broadnet has been the web logon screen. Two of India's biggest telcos -- Reliance and Tata do this. You have to renew your connection once everyday by signing in from your browser -- there is no way of logging in from on the router. This piece of coding idiocy inflicts human intervention at a point where it should never be. They have disabled the always-on functionality that is inherent to any broadband connection. The end result? Forget having torrents/security cameras/downloads on. Unless you are hawkishly monitoring your downloads, they simply won't get done.

Broadnet's web interface is all empty promises, like its customer care:

To conclude: speaking to Reliance Customer Care and having any work done out of them is near impossible. If you have a technical problem, google it. No, you cannot escalate a problem. No, you cannot speak to a manager. The person at the other end is a bullshit artist paid to take your call, reassure you using any words or means without actually doing a goddamn thing. Even YOU telecom has better phone support. When it comes to Reliance Broadnet, if things don't work well the first time around, you are done for.

Yeah, this has been my experience with tata as well as reliance; they just would not make it possible to monitor your usage and then send inflated bills with 2 Rs/MB rates. They are getting away with this nonsense just because there is no trai ombudsman. I have not been able to monitor my usage since last one month and relcom just does not care.

I totally agree with you and feel the pain and aggression. These people are corporate white collar criminals who are out there to fleece people of their hard earned money. I had applied for a Wi-Max connection from Reliance Communication on the 11th July 09 and paid Rs. 2979/- via cheque i was promised a connection within one working week, after waiting patiently for ten days i gave a call to the associate why the connection was not installed i was told that there was no equipment so it the installation was set for the next week, after a week i called the sales associate who said he cant provide the connection at this moment as they still have no equipment. I want to know "why in the hell would you collect money from the customer if you do not have the equipment in stock". After a fortnight i asked for a refund i was given a email id and asked to write to them. there is response from Reliance Communication then i tried calling them and was submitted to their regular torture techniques of endless hold and the call being transferred from one associate to the other and asked the same details again and again which really makes you think "what was i thinking when i gave them a cheque for the connection. It is a harrowing experience Trust me ". I have threatened them that i will publish their stunts in paper that was the time i got a call from Reliance Communication and was promised refund in 15 working days, sad to say but it is true these guys seem to made of thick skin and have not bothered to refund the money till date. I am at my wits end and now it is not about the money but i feel i need to spend the time money and energy to take them to consumer court. If everyone of us combine forces we can make these corporate thieves accountalbe.

The broadband connection offered by BSNL is somewhat better than others. Donot think I am singing in praise of them. Of all the evils, this one is somewhat better. TRAI is toothless in bringing the erring telecom companies to better their services. In India every one is at the mercy of these telecom companies. These companies talk of only AVERAGE REVENUE PER USER (ARPU) and donot take care of their customers. To hell with them as they are profit motivated only not customer oriented. I pity the indian telecom subscribers that includes mine also as they are putting up with this sordid state of affairs. God only save the subscribers.

I faced almost similar problem recently. In fact, the Reliance internet worked only for 1 hour and total data transfer was 32 KB which their so called engineer used while testing. After that connection was down for almost 3 days. We constantly called CC but to no avail. At last, we decided to surrender the connection for which they said that we will have to pay the last month bill as well as surrender charges but after a lot of heated arguments, they agreed for disconnection without charges. And, the very next day their sales person was at our door selling Reliance Connection.

iS CHEEZ MAIN KOI DOODH KA DHULA NAHIN HAI! I had a very similar experience with Airtel Broadband and Landline services. I had an Airtel landline at my clinic, which I used for broadband access and for my ICICI Bank merchant services' EDC machine. Earlier I used to be subscribed for 4Gb limit, and my bills were in the 2000-2500 limit. Then I changed to 350KBPS unlimited usage plan at 999, which should have brought my bills down...but lo and behold my bills shot up to 4500-5500 range. When I called them up, I was informed that the rise was due to local phone usage! I was shocked as I open the clinic at 9:30 am and close it at 9pm and the local calls attributed to my phone were made after clinic hours! Sunil Bharti Mittal bhi chor hai! Hum jaise aam aadmi ko lootkaqr woh karodpati bana hua hai!

Reliance is bad, i have been using their unlimited plan for 3 years, then recently as prices went down, i opted for another plan for which I gave 3 requests over 3 months, each time I was assured it would be done within 48-72 hours. Still after 3 months it is not done. The reason I suspect is they get higher monthly charges from the old plan which is expensive than the one I want now. Customer care is shit, their seniors Floor Supervisors are more shiitier & their seniors Team Leaders are more. I am disconnecting it & shifting to MTNL, at least they do the work after some chai-paani. Reliance people dont even want to realise the problem.

My experience with Reliance has always been bad. Actually, they don't have any customer care system. Ask any pre-paid mobile owner. I have lost thousands of rupees when Reliance was newly launched as "they cannot do anything about their system fault". Their only standard reply was "our system is down". Reliance was born and brought up as a dishonest company so you cannot expect customer service from them. There are some exceptional people at Webworld.

I have been using the TATA Indicom broadband connection since almost an year and only from the last 3 months or so i have been facing quite a few problems. Also i do have to keep switching off/on the router many times a day in order to get continuous connection. But heck the plan i m using is totally worth it for me to complain too much. I guess we sometimes we just gotta bite the bullet and hang in there till things get better...

I had a similiar cable connection while i was in mumbai n it wud disconnected or someone would cut the cable etc etc ..Now in France I have a cable connection, not once it has been disconnected or out of service..n the speeds are lightining fast...no clue y india has not still able to have internet speeds like countries in europe.. also we have adsl connection which is 30mbps..not once does it go down ...In India its all abt looting the customer in wholesale..

by Melwyn, Paris, on Sep 12, 2008 09:01 PM, Report abuse   Reply

Also internet connection is more cheaper in europe (France) adsl line includes telephone, tv & internet (20mbps) for 29? (1500 Rs) n unltd :) , if u take cable its 30 mbps at same price +telephone and now there is fibre optics as well 50mbps +tel+tv = 30 ? ...surprisingly internet is cheaper in europe :P

by Melwyn, Paris, on Sep 12, 2008 09:04 PM, Report abuse

Well, lucky you, talk about people in Australia. i've been a heavy internet user in New Delhi, used the MTNL TriBand, found the service to be good and affordable. Now i'm in melbourne. ADSL and ADSL2+ are commonly used here and are expensive as compared to what we have in India. An unlimited internet usage connection with good bandwidth is difficult to imagine. Cable internet exists but is very expensive and uncommon. Quite not what I was expecting when before coming here.

My Tata landline was dead few days back. I complained at around 15:30 on a Saturday afternoon and I was assured it would be working within 6 hours. I did not believe it because that meant 21:30 on a Saturday night. But believe me the engineer turned up at 20:00 hrs and repaired it in just about 5 minutes.

Well, had similar pathetic experience with Vodafone customer support. So shifted to a different service provider. But for internet/broadband, I always found BSNL to be the best (in Chennai). Downtimes had not been for more than one day (due to people cutting the cables). They always did fix the problems. Considering that BSNL seemed to have mended their service, I took their EvDO service when I moved to Hyderabad. Well seems pretty decent, but no match for wired broadband though. My experience with both Airtel broadband in Chennai was not good either. They did not provide a public ip (static or dynamic), which made it difficult for me to run DynDNS so I could remotely administer systems. BSNL seems to be doing a lot of things right.

Last Year, I took a Reliance Broadband Unlimited 256 Kbps plan which costs 1200 per month. After using it for a Month, I received a Bill of Rs 14,000. I was surprised and shocked to see the the Bill Amount. I called customer care, about the problem and they assured to fix the Billing Amount. But instead of fixing the problem, they keep on calling me and insisted me to pay the Rs 14,000 Bill. I received atleast 4 calls from there Customer Service even after lodging a Billing Error complaint. Every time I have to explain my problem all over again. Finally, after a week they disconnected my broadband becuase I didn't paid Rs 14,000. These guys are pathetic. After visiting there chandigarh office and calling there office, my problem was fixed but I disconnected there connection and decided never ever to use a Reliance Phone or Broadband in Future again. Reliance Communications has the WORST Customer Care and the BEST Customer Torture Service.

Not only on the Broadband connections .. the recent release of BIG TV from reliance is not at all reliable. Its better they change their company name to un-reliance. I have never seen a worst service given by anyone. I was one of the victim on this BIG TV connection. I suggest those who see this forum not to buy any Reliance products at all.

I really agree with you, that BSNL broadband is the BEST available in the country. They have so many plans that suits every individual or firm. You can select it and if you want to change the plan, simply fill up a form and give to the customer care office. Phone calls not entertained. Earlier they used to change plans as it suits you, but now it is done, I think once in a month only, obviously because of work pressure. The billing is pucca, no chance of over billing etc. There are so many plans with telephone rental or without. My BSNL broadband is always on and find it very easy to use, speed is OK for a home connection. Monthly payment only Rs.750/- for net and phone plus call charges. I have taken an unlimited plan. So better change your service provide if one finds difficulties as explained above.

Basically the problem lies in the system of customer care itself. I know how it hurts to be part of a company, I mean the other side of the river. I used to bled tears for being a part of the company and see how the customer was not cared enough and given due respect as I believe they are our bread winners. Hope the system get changed

What Shriram has recounted is just the tip of the iceberg so to say. We have had even worse - rather nightmarish experiences with their supposedly 1Mbps unmetered connection. We actually upgraded to a 4Mbps connection. But the only thing which changed between the two plans is the tariff.... download speed (or lack of) was abysmal. A snail would finish faster. We wish lods of good luck, tons and tons of patience and unlimited time to get yourself service which which is usable.

The best way to solve these kind of issues: 1) use google to find at least 15 senior people at the company, including investor relations, CEO, CFO etc. 2) mail everyone (not using BCC) and tell them about your experience, that you are a recognized authority in your neighbourhood and that you intend to dissuade every from using their service 3) wait for the response to come in 4) your problem will be solved within a day Tried and tested by me for Tata, BSNL, Sify, Vodafone, MTNL and Air India.

Thank you for narrating the experience. I had a worse experience with their DataCard. Speed is awful. I had paid for a year. I won't renew. There is nobody in charge; no one who'll take the responsibility. Their concern is sell, sell, sell - to hell with the customer after the purchase. I will never buy a Reliance product - be it cellphone services, petrol, or MF I would urge everyone to stay away from all their offerings.

Trust BSNL broadband. They deliver more than the promised speed.I've been using dataone since July 2005 in Mysore without any problems whatsoever. They are prompt in changing the plans on request and the network has been down for not more than a couple of times in three years. They are the cheapest and the best.

Reliance is horrible. The guy who came home for installation was DRUNK! Scared the daylights out of us. We complained but nothing happened. What can be done? How do you even make them realize they are not gods.

same thing happened with me, when somebody calls me, the person gets a message that "the number you have called is switched off", then in the evenings i get messages saying that "you have missed calls, sms MCA to to this damn number at Rs.2/sms", even when i m in a high signal area, even when i have changed 3 handsets because of this problem, called customer care more than 75 times, you know wht they suggested, they said that 'sir call us at the exact moment when this problem is arising, man how can i know that somebody is calling me at the moment?? idiots at the call centre. Now coming to tata, i took TataIndicom Plug2Surf in may 2008, a damn mistake i did in my computing life, it failed to surf, i mean the speed was pathetic, even slower than Tel. line dial up, i surrendered the connection after five days, i called them many times to come get the bill and disconnect the services offered, but they came after 2 months, and i had to submit 2 months bill, but luckily got disconnected, now they call me every week to remind me to submit the due bills, how irritating, i abused them many a times, but look at those shameless fellas. they keep on calling me. i never expected such behaviour and erratic performance from such companies.

Very tru man... this saga happened with me as well... n since then.. i shifted into prepaid and forgot the customer care number

by Shridhar, Pune, on Sep 12, 2008 05:05 PM, Report abuse   Reply

Buddy wait till you hear my experience... I got the connection in Nov 2007.. It used to work exactly 4 out of 15 days. Then the connection would be out and the call to customer care n their bull shit rounds would start... This took 10-12 days n 4 days of connection n back all over again.. I got the connection disconnected around Feb 2008 and can you imagine i still get monthly bills and calls asking for payment. And when i tell them i have it disconnected they say we'll CALL you back :-) Heights of Hoplessness !

Call them again but record the entire conversation. Then file a case in consumer court

IT IS THE FATE OF INDIAN CUSTOMER. When was the last time when you call a customer service and got your problem solved. I can narrate a number of incidents, but out of which the worst customer care support includes, 1. Dishtv customer care - pathetic, does not know even the basics 2. BSNL customer care i - Yes folks, there is a customer care available for BSNL 3. Reliance/Airtel broadband - atleast airtel is relatively better , still it is worse You can add many companies here, almost all are the same crop. It is the FATE of indian customer to live with this...

I don't have a case yet. All i wanted was the unlimited plan, and as far as I know, i'm still on speed select, paying 90 paise per MB. One customer care exec assured me that it would be done in 3 days. 3 days later another exec says it will take 7 more days. I don't know who to beleive or what to beleive, but talking to customer care is not helping, all it does is create more frustration. I'm gonna have to wait for the bill to come at the end of the month and then fight it out. Does anyone else have a similar story? Will I be paying a bill of a few thousands for all the bandwidth I have consumed, or will it be 799 + service tax? Or will it be a combination of A+B, with me paying speed select rates until my plan is changed? Does the billing dept. redress these issues or are they going to take as much money from me as possible? Because it's more money for for dirubhai ambani group, and from that perspective, the customer care wing is doing a great job!

Sriram, I am sorry for your troubles. But, tell me something. If "They have disabled the always-on functionality that is inherent to any broadband connection" then, they are blatantly violating TRAI's definition of broadband ! Shouldn't they be held liable ?

by Nagesh, Bangalore, on Sep 12, 2008 12:47 PM, Report abuse   Reply

Most Routers support authentication methods like Radius, PPPoE, PPTP, LT2P, etc. but Reliance HAD to use their own proprietary authentication method. The people who designed this system couldn't signal their malign intent more clearly.

Even with a pre-pain mobile phone, we deduct the balance every now and then. On asking three different customer care representative, all the three gave different reasons. Some said that I have registered for VAS which actually i did not. Some said that I have been accessing R World, but my handset actually didnt event had R World.

Well u took reliance.. i can recount such incidents for so many customer cares that i have almost given up hope a number of times. At present i am in Uttarakhand and the Idea customer care gives me the creeps here.. There hasnt been a single time that i have been able to get through and say what i wanted. The Do Not Disturb is in shambles.. And never gets activated. Calls to customer care get disconnected at random without any reason. And obviously i cant get back to the person who took my call last.. Anyways this can go on and on. Can someone tell me where do i file a complain for things like this. TRAI or consumer court or something. What could be best..
