Cross-platform TCP/IP Flaws Disclosed

Cross-platform TCP/IP Flaws Disclosed

Rahul Srinivas, Oct 03, 2008 1705 hrs IST

Researchers Robert Lee and Jack Louis claim to have accidentally identified the flaw back in 2005.

DoS attacks have been a hot favorite amongst veteran hackers. While it has spawned of an offspring in the form of DDoS attacks, the original version is still alive and kicking. While many flaws have been used in the past to execute DoS attacks, the latest vulnerabilities seem to be one of the most easily overlooked.

A team of researchers have recently claimed to identify a few vulnerabilities within the TCP/IP stack that can lead to exploitation, as well as result in deadly DoS attacks. From being able to crash the target device to slowing it down thoroughly to ensure it is re-booted, these gaping security holes seem to be raising a concern amongst the security circles.

Researchers Robert Lee and Jack Louis claim to have accidentally identified the flaw back in 2005, but have since then documented as many as five valid attack methods. Additionally, with the amount of research these guys have put in, they have reason to believe that as many as 30 or more methods may exist, depending on the specifics of the stack implementation. The duo confirm that as of now, there is no TCP/IP stack that has been able to "patch" the vulnerabilities. And yes, adopting Ipv6 too will not help.

Nothing much apart from these few sketchy details have been revealed by the researchers, and it seems it will stay that way, at least for now.
