Nokia has been traditionally a late entrant in to the megapixel wars. While companies like Samsung and Sony Ericsson already have 12 megapixel camera phones on sale, folks at Nokia continue to sell the N86 - currently, the company's only 8 megapixel, flagship cameraphone.
While we always knew the N86 would soon lose its flagship crown, the big question was when! Looks like that day is not far now. Latest rumors (in the form of a video) point towards a new Nokia device, currently known as the N87 to be "in the making". This will be a 12 megapixel cameraphone and like its predecessors, will sport a dual slider design.
The device is likely to sport a 3.2 inch WVGA (800 x 480 pixels) capacitive touchscreen display, 16GB of internal memory, a 600MHz processor and, dual LED and Xenon flash. The phone will also come loaded with the newly redesigned Symbian UI. There is no word as to when this one will see the light of the day but there was a talk of Nokia coming up with a 12 megapixel shooter by December 2009. That, however, seems a remote possibility as of now.

"Nokia has been traditionally a late entrant in to the megapixel wars". That statement is SO untrue. Nokia came up with the first megapixel camera. the first 3.2 mp camera. the n95, at 5mp, was the first in its category. Nokia just wasn't the first with 8 and 12mp. You cannot say they have 'traditionally' been late.
First Megapixel camera Sony Ericsson S300 SWIVEL phone,
