Coming Soon: Kevin Mitnick's Biography!

Techtree News Staff, Jul 21, 2008 1400 hrs IST

Once the world's most wanted hacker, Kevin Mitnick is writing a biography. At the very least, it should be an interesting read.

If you are even remotely interested in Computer and Internet Security, the name Kevin Mitnick should ring a bell.

The hacker turned security analyst, once the "most wanted computer hacker in the world", was convicted for computer crimes and for possession of several forged identification documents. Before being docked, he mastered the art of social engineering to gain access to various data like username, passwords, modem phone numbers et all. Mitnick's reputation grew to such mythic proportions that he was rumored to be able to launch nuclear weapons by whistling into a payphone!

After a prison term of five years, which included eight months in solitary confinement, Mitnick was released in January 2003 - but with restrictions on using the Internet or any means of communication other than a landline telephone.

Recently, while speaking at the Hackers on Planet Earth conference, Mitnick revealed that it was time to tell the world 'his side of the story' as under the terms of his parole he was not allowed to profit from his crimes - which included writing a biography. Now that the seven-year restriction has ended, Mitnick has signed a deal with publisher Little, Brown and Company to reveal his story.

Mitnick revealed that the book will shed light on his social engineering tactics, which he relied on more than sheer technical wizardry. He had the uncanny ability to leak classified information from people which he used rampantly during his peak time as a hacker.

After his heyday as the world's most wanted hacker, he now leads an honest living as a computer security consultant, where he spends time looking for security holes in software.

At the very least, this should be an interesting read!
