CeBit 08: Sony Ericsson Flurry of Phones

Techtree News Staff, Mar 07, 2008 2329 hrs IST

Sony Ericsson has unveiled a bagful of phones panning across different series. Here's what our correspondent has to say about them.

At CeBit 08, Sony Ericsson has showcased a bagful of phones panning across different series.

Here's the low-down from our correspondent at the electronics fair:

Most of the models that were announced at Barcelona a few weeks back were on display here, along with a few more. While some of the designs were very impressive, I was fairly disappointed with quite a few of them.

A lot of phones including some from the W series had an uninspiring plastic feel. The W380 and W980 belonged to that category. I can still pardon them for doing that to the W380, which is expected to be an entry-level option but the W980 is supposed to be higher up the price chain, and they could have certainly done a lot better with the piano finish there. On the brighter side, the W890 is very elegant and the W350 is sleek and light.

The G700 and the G900 phones seemed the most impressive of the lot, loaded with features and good looks. Though the pricing information is not available, they are expected to be 'not too expensive' as they claim to be mainstream business plus multimedia phones, and offer features like touch-screen and organizer, among others.

The new entry-level R (radio) series phones - R300 and R306 look better in the snaps than in reality, and the lesser I say about them the better. I will let the Reviews team tell you more about them sometime soon.

Last but by no means the least, SE also showcased the first of their much-talked about XPERIA series of phone, the XPERIA X1. It is very impressive to say the least. The series is a "convergence of communication and entertainment" as SE likes to put it, and it is precisely that. It has a large 3-inches screen with a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels, and for some reason, SE has opted for a 65K color display rather than a 262K one. The phone has all possible bells and whistles like a sliding QWERTY keypad (similar to the HTC), 3.2 mega pixels auto-focus camera, media player, Web browser, Bluetooth (A2DP), Edge, Wi-Fi, GPS, USB support, etc, and runs on Windows Mobile. One surprising aspect here is that, unlike other SE phones, this one supports MicroSD cards.

One thing missing though is a second camera for video conferencing. Wonder how they missed that. May be they will put it in the final release, which unfortunately isn't expected any time soon. The wait may be as long as 2009. The device is reasonably compact for all the features it packs, and way smaller than Nokia communicators. And just for your reference, the X1 measures 110 x 53 x 16.7mm and weighs 145 grams.

The x1 will definitely beat the p1i in all ways..the thing is people should wait before they buy a phone..and check if it is totally necessary..new technology comes up everyday and the prices of phones reduce drastically..so it is best to wait before you buy a phone.

Windows Mobile requires 32-bit processors to operate, and 32-bit processors can handle either a 65,000-color system or a 16M-color system. Since the latter is likely to consume more power, manufacturers of WM mobile devices tend to stick to 65,000-color displays. After all, for a business user, a longer battery life would be more valuable than a screen with twice or thrice the number of colors.

Dude, the reason the XPERIA X1 has a 65K-color display is because it runs on Windows Mobile.
