AMD has announced availability of the AMD 780 Series motherboard GPU (graphic processing unit) at CeBit; reports our correspondent from there.

More important announcements from the ongoing CeBit 2008 in Germany.

AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) has announced availability of the AMD 780 Series motherboard GPU (graphic processing unit) that promises a rich computing experience for casual gamers and multimedia enthusiasts.

AMD claims that its 780 Series, when paired with an AMD Phenom 9000 series quad-core processor or an Athlon 64 X2 dual-core processor, will deliver significant enhancements in gaming and high-definition experiences for mainstream PC customers.

The 780 Series motherboard GPU forms a core platform component for both the company's desktop PC platform codenamed "Cartwheel", and its notebook PC platform codenamed "Puma"; scheduled to launch in the second quarter of this year.

Speaking at the CeBit launch, Phil Eisler, corporate vice president and general manager (Chipset Division) of AMD, said, "The launch of the AMD 780 Series marks an uncommonly large step forward in mainstream PC capabilities. Starting today, consumers can attain superior HD video and casual 3D gaming experiences, as well as remarkable energy efficiency. The release of the AMD 780 Series is in keeping with the AMD vision that computing can deliver the 'ultimate visual experience', now at mainstream PC price points."

As the first AMD chipset to offer DirectX 10 game compatibility, casual gamers will now be able to enjoy enhanced game performance, truly life-like 3D graphics, and dynamic interactivity in the latest game titles, claims AMD.

Also, gamers looking to scale their performance with the addition of a discrete graphics card can achieve superior performance with ATI Hybrid Graphics Technology that harnesses the graphics power of both a discrete graphics card and the motherboard GPU in tandem.

The 780G chipset is also the second-generation AMD chipset to feature AMD Overdrive, which is a simple user interface that brings performance tuning to the masses.

According to AMD, the 780G chipset would bring a full HD experience to mainstream PCs -- with support for the latest and most demanding formats, including VC-1, MPEG-2, and H.264.

The chipset features AMD Unified Video Decoder (UVD), and directs HD playback to the better-suited GPU rather than to the CPU so consumers can enjoy a smooth HD-viewing experience.

The chipset delivers 55nm process technology; it delivers optimal power management both in idle, or when playing Blu-ray movies, without compromising on performance.

AMD said its 780 Series motherboard GPU is scheduled to be widely available from over 40 AMD partners at launch. Global OEMs are expected to offer AMD 780 Series-based PCs starting in the second quarter of this year.

In another announcement, AMD demonstrated its first 45nm quad-core chips -- running multiple operating systems and a range of processing-intensive applications. The company said the 45nm transistors are engineered to enable greater performance-per-watt capabilities in AMD processors and platforms.

This important milestone is the first of many -- as AMD moves toward delivery of 45nm products later this year, the company said.

Hope these Mobos come out in India soon! The chipset has so many promising feature plus costs much lesser! Pairing it with a High end CPU and Mid End Discrete Card will give us such wonderful time with all the games and HD demand!

AMD is very good in on board gfx with this release. Intel is now more power hungry and is not good option in the new market.

While Intel's chipsets get more power-hungry with every generation, AMD's newest design 780G seems to have been designed with the goal of reducing power consumption. With the move to 55 nm, AMD has been able to lower the power consumption of its chipset. Intel, on the other hand, still manufactures its G33 and G35 chipsets at 90 nm, resulting in a much higher thermal dissipation loss. The 780G chipset sets a new record for the lowest power consumption. Thus this combined with AMD 45W Athlon X2 4850e is ideal combination for Indian conditions ? considering the high ambient temperatures so prevalent in our country.
