CEATEC: DirectX11 Chips in 2009

The GPU arena is set to heat up again!

Advanced Micro Devices' DirectX11 compatible graphics chips (GPUs) could be expected in 2009.

Sharing the company's plans at the ongoing CEATEC 2008 trade show in Japan, Rick Bergman, senior vice president for graphics division of AMD, also talked about AMD's transition to 40nm process and predicted an increase in general-purpose computing on GPUs.

The event also saw AMD inadvertently spilling the beans about Microsoft's naughty little secret about Windows 7 in its show slide 'What to expect in 2009'.

With AMD's announcement about GPU manufacturing transition to 40nm process and usage of GDDR5 memory standard, the GPU arena is set to heat up again as it will aid the game developers to spice up games with more sophisticated visual effects and gameplay.

While Microsoft gets all set for the pre-beta release at Professional Developers Conference 2008 from October27-30, AMD talked about the rise in general-purpose computing with the help of shader computing in DirectX11 and OpenCL, and also featured in Apple's upcoming Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.

Adding more to what was mentioned earlier, DirectX11's new compute shader technology will aid developers to merit GPU of the graphics cards as parallel processor, besides using it for mere 3D graphics rendering. The multi-resource handling feature of DirectX will enable taking advantage of multi-core machines while playing games.

Furthermore, the chipmaker predicts an increase in the popularity of HD televisions supporting display resolution of more than 1920 x 1080 with the Digital Walls or wall-size display screens. Displays with 3D stereoscopic technologies will also get high popularity in 2009.

Are they talking about their rivals Nvidia's 3D Stereoscopic technology (cough, cough) or ATI is working on something similar? Besides that, multi-touch (like Microsoft Surface) devices and other input devices (like Mobile Internet Devices and touchscreen phones) will also gain in popularity.
