Building a Social Network from Within: Yahoo!

"We're making Yahoo! more social, but we are not building yet another social network," chief technology officer of Yahoo! said

Taking a cue from other Internet biggies, Yahoo! has also decided to jump into the social networking fray with the announcement of its "Y!Open", a new Web platform that will host all of its online services including Web mail, instant messenger, photo, and more on a single Web page.

During a keynote at the Web 2.0 Expo in San Francisco on Thursday, Ari Balogh, chief technology officer of Yahoo!, said that the company is rewiring Yahoo! from the inside out, across all properties, to fundamentally open up these Web services and provide a consistent development model, and a consistent deployment and consumer experience as well.

Basically, "Y!Open" will allow users to have a social profile page and integrate all Yahoo! services as well as customize the page by adding applications, thus giving users an experience similar to social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace. It will enable users to find and interact with each other in an easier manner.

Meanwhile, denying that Yahoo! is simply recreating another social networking site, Neal Sample, chief platforms architect wrote on Yahoo's corporate blog, "There's a massive, latent social network within Yahoo!, and we are going to bring it to the surface. We're making Yahoo! more social, but we are not building yet another social network. We already have an incredible social network... we just need to unlock it."

For this, the company has opened its doors to third-party developers to create applications spanning across its network of sites. The process has already started with the opening up of the beta version of Search Monkey development environment, which lets external developers customize the presentation of search results.

Version 1.0 of this open platform "Y!Open" is expected to release sometime later this year. The company hasn't given any specific month for the launch.
