The main features and drawbacks of the four mainstream browsers available as of today

    print mail share

Soon after our first impression on the Internet Explorer 8 RC1, we decided to do the inevitable, a browser comparison with long time rivals Firefox, Opera, and the latest kid on the block, Chrome.

Note that this is not a review to find out which amongst these is the best browser around. It would be unwise to do such a comparison because, eventually, it boils down to personal choices, and for the same reason, there will always be controversy and related chest thumping about how "my" browser betters "yours." Therefore, this is just a rehash of the features and drawbacks of these four mainstream browsers available as of today.

Internet Explorer 8

Let us talk about the latest release initially, the Internet Explorer 8 RC 1.  While it would be difficult for power users to switch back to something as mundane as IE8, folks over at Microsoft seem to have worked hard to make the browser appealing to users who have long ago ditched it and had switched to the likes of Firefox and Opera. As to how far it has succeeded in bringing back the deserters is anybody's guess. Features like web slices, accelerators, and visual search have been added, making the browser an attractive option for the average user. IE8 with its beta version was also one of the first to debut the Private Browsing mode, which back then was unavailable on the Firefox and still not available on Opera. Safari was the first to introduce Private Browsing.

However, IE8 still suffers from inherent faults that come to the fore the moment you click download. The installation exe is a mammoth 16MB file - second only to Chrome probably, which incidentally uses an online installer. The installation procedure also involves a couple of instances of restarting the computer making the process look regressive as compared to the faster approach the others have. The installation takes a good part of 10 minutes if your system happens to be up-to-date with all available Windows Updates - you better have a uber fast PC! If you do not frequently update your PC, you might as well end up with irritating messages.

C'mon Microsoft, all I want to do is to just browse the Internet!

Did Microsoft say that they did some tweaking to the rendering engine? Maybe, but most pages are a whole lot slower to load as compared to Chrome, Firefox, and Opera. As mentioned in our first look article, an ACID test performed on the browser gave a dismal score of 20 - the lowest amongst all the others tested here. While these standards may not represent anything, it does show the browser underpinnings. And no, there is still no sign of a download manager anywhere.

So, should or rather will the power users make the switch? No way, until Microsoft rehashes the product ground up! The browser is moving in the right direction and will definitely appeal to average users who still prefer the charm of the good ol' Internet Explorer. Those used to the likes of Firefox, Chrome, or Opera will be happy to stick to their choices now.

Firefox 3

The world's second most popular browser is continuing its march to topple the gentle giant from Microsoft and has been successfully eating into IE's market share for the past few years. Major pluses for Firefox users are the variety of add-ons that make it more of an application, rather than just a browser. The version in question here is the latest stable release - version 3.0.5. The quickness of the installation procedure is evident from the moment you update it. The installation file is just over 7MB in size, making it less than half IE8's size. An ACID3 test on the browser revealed a decent score of 71/100. Note that the latest beta version, 3.1 Beta2, has added Private Browsing and some other features as well, but we're not considering it until the final version is out.

Apart from appealing to the advanced user thanks to its customization and add-ons, what makes it the choice for average users is the fast rendering and ease of use. While it might be difficult for many to be weaned away from the default Internet Explorer, most people are hooked once they start using this browser. A vast majority of tech users are Firefox users and we did see a lot of responses praising Firefox for its simplicity, security, ease of use, and not to mention, the add ons. However, Private Browsing has still not found its way in.

Opera 9.63

Another contender for the best browser around is none other than Opera. Although the market share might tell a different story, Opera is still considered by many to be the best browser around. While Mozilla users may swear about the add-ons, Opera users counter the claim by saying that Opera manages to do what most Firefox add-ons can, out of the box. Additionally, if Firefox has add-ons, Opera does come with its widgets and, not to mention, the mouse gestures. The latest stable version managed an Acid 3 score of 85/100. Opera was also touted to be the fastest browser around for the past few years and dedicated Opera fans still swear by the browser. Opera also has features like the speed dial, skins, and an entirely new browser engine.

Google Chrome

Google created a flutter in the browser circles back in September when it announced the release of the Chrome, the company's first open source browser. Months after its launch, Chrome too has managed to garner a dedicated set of users. Chrome seems to thrive on Google's concept of simplicity, and the best thing about the browser is its rather large viewing area. It does away with unwanted toolbars taking away the screen real estate. Chrome also managed to graduate to a stable version back in December, barely three months after its beta release. One thing you might not like is the installation procedure

The browser had the Incognito mode (Private mode) right from the beta stage, and has integrated the function quite neatly. The startup and load times are also fast. While Chrome is still very crude for advanced users, its open source pedigree works in its favor. Once the browser starts supporting add-ons, there are a sizable number of people ready to make the switch. There are also some users who use Chrome for its simplicity, as a barebones browser.

What browser do you use? Have you tried the IE8 RC 1 yet? Chrome users: How long have you been using it and is the wait for the first add-on making you impatient? Firefox users might be glad to find the private browsing mode in the latest beta - but couldn't the feature have arrived a tad earlier? As for the Opera, will it ever be able to shrug off its niche tag -  do you prefer to remain with a niche browser?

Primarily Chrome, I like the speed, cleanness, and app windows (great for hulu & pandora) and will likely make the full move once they support extensions. FFox is dear because of many extensions I've used for years. IE only because a few pages I need use ActiveX (yes FF has ext). Opera on my BBerry and keep meaning to reload on desktop . . . soon. - a tech guy in Oregon.

I'm very happy with Opera. Streamlined and so easy to use. Only problem is that I'm always trying to use mouse gestures on all my other programs now.

I have tried them all... IE SUCKS really bad, as a web developer I HATE IE! with all my heart!!! I have tried Firefox new betas but i am in love with OPERA 10 alpha!!!... Opera 10 alpha is amazing!!!... Its almost as fast as Chrome but it makes you faster in many ways... (UNDO CLOSE TAB, SPEED DIAL, ADDRESS BAR, MOUSE GESTURES,WAND, many WIDGETS available ,SYNCHRONIZE , PANELS, COPY TO NOTE, VOICE, ZOOM , FIND in page while you type, spell, imap mail,feeds... Which browser does this? for example: I really like the TILE and FIT TO WIDTH features! Combined by the ZOOM % dropdown button lets me focused on many parts of pages at once. I watch a live broadcast , with LIVE STATS , and chat in one screen... Thats why all the other browsers have to implement ideas and copy OPERA, because OPERA is the best!!!..And once you put some hidden buttons on the tool bar and learn all the features ... It makes you write about it! My second browser is Chrome , which starts in a flash and is a quicker, but simpler!... If its Google is GOOD!

I really enjoy Firefox, but only because of the skins. The pages I can access correctly are too few. Recently I switched to IE8 rc1 as my default. I agree that IE is slower, but .. it works. Not more I can really ask out of a browser.

I am one thathas used Firefox 3, Opera 9.5, and Chrome (with IE8 to very limited extent). I already know enough about IE8 to make it, to me, the worse of the four (but far better than some of the other, not mentioned browsers). I prefer to use Firefox, because not only is it fast, but it's no doubt the most customizable. There are so many add-ons and so many skins, themes, and plugins. Opera is my 2nd, because it is light and very, very fast, and can be tweaked to make it faster. It is also customizable, and has a fair share of widgets. Google Chrome comes a step behing Opera, because it's just as fast, much more simple, but is only for the real "average user", who isn't trying to make a browser their own browser. IE8 comes in 4th, plain and simple. It's not the worst, for I've tried Off-by-One and K-meleon and they fare... not so well? But I hope I have made enough valid points here that I am able to get some people to agree.

I've tried all the browsers in this test and agree with some of the comments that they all work but some are better than others. IE8 RC1 is to slow to be considered a default browser though it is still needed to access some pages. I have had many stability problems with Opera 9.63 (It crashed my computer). It also takes forever to set it up the way you want (for power users). Firefox 3.05 is faster and customizable but still can't access all web pages. Google Chrome is blazing fast but can load even fewer pages. So the issue is a trade off, which browser here is the fastest, most secure, most stable, most customizable offering? The answer is none are. Use anything other than IE8 for most of you surfing and you will be fine, then supplement with IE8 when needed. I personally like Chrome the best for it's speed and incognito mode. Ive tried Firefox 3.1B2 and it will be my next favorite after all stability issues have been addressed. I believe Opera is full of bugs I would not touch it with a 10 foot pole. Each to his own...

Simple. Minimalist. Secure. Chrome :) Plugins, specifically ones that require admin rights I can do without. Just take out Google's default big brother settings and your A for away!

Seriously, if you think 16 MB is a 'mammoth' install and that you dare to complain about the install time (which no doubt took less than five minutes on my machine) is long, you're running out of valid complaints my friend. Slower to load? What are you running on, a 9600 baud modem and a PII? I'm on Cogeco cable 10 MBPS down/1 MBPS up and everything is insane fast. I see nothing there to complain about, regardless if FF installs without restarting the computer. I've been using computers for 25 years and wouldn't change IE for the world. You might have also wanted to mention - upon the installation of FF3, it changes IE's icons to say in brackets something like "(without add-ons)." Did I tell FF to change my IE icons and change my IE experience? No. TBH, Acid3 didn't make an impact on my thoughts after reading this article. It's just an inconclusive chart that doesn't mean much to the end user. It all comes down to people's preferences. You can like your browser and I'll continue to like mine.

Yes, 16 MB is a mammoth install considering its a browser. This is when you have others who manage to do what IE does in less than half the file size. I performed the install on a "normal" test bed, a simple two year old laptop connected to a decent 2MB line -- this is how most of the people access the Internet. As for the install time, please note that not everyone has a Quad Core system with a 10MB line to back it up. As for the incoclusiveness of the article, I have clearly mentioned that it eventually boils down to personal preferences and that this is not a comparo to pick the best browser out there -- although the title might make it sound look like one -- apologies for that. I have been a Firefox freak ever since it was around but have now shifted completely to Chrome. Why? Bcause I prefer it. I agree with your last line."You can like your browser and I'll continue to like mine." Live and let live. :) Keep Writing!

I prefer Chrome. The speed is mind-blowing compared to IE8. Firefox is comparable, but takes up more screen space than Chrome. I never used add ons because they slowed down my computer. If you want all the good super features of Chrome just become a part of the developer channel. They'll say it's unstable, but that's a lie. Yay for Chrome!

I use Firefox for the addons, especially Greasemonkey. I like Opera, but NO, it does not have all those things "right out of the box.' I tried using the modded greasemonkey scripts, but Opera simply doesn't play as well with them as Firefox/Greasemonkey does, and the lack of compatible scripts is pitiful. You'd think all these Opera fanboys might do something about that if they want to yell at Firefox users for not switching! LOL I WANT to use Opera, but it simply cannot do what I need it to do, and I'm not a javascript coder. Yes, it's faster, but not so much that it's worth giving up the functionality of FFX. Chrome? I use it when I *only* have the need for speed on certain sites - it's faster than Firefox + addons and Opera + widgets for me, ACID3 test notwithstanding. I haven't tried using G'monkey scripts with Chrome yet, but if it works as promised, I'll probably use it more. IE is a joke. I won't even bother with the IE8 release candidate; the "stable" IE7 is pointless enough. No sense cluttering my precious disk space with unnecessary crap that I won't use! I can't see why MS even bothers with a new browser at this point, unless they make IE radically different and can fill a need that isn't already filled elsewhere with three other far superior browsers - and make it standards-compliant, ffs! And really, of the people still using IE, how many of those still haven't even upgraded to IE7 yet? Maybe IE8 is nothing more than a new IE for MS employees who have to use IE, and very few others. :shrugs:

I'm tired of this "browser wars" bilge! There is/are no browser war/s. Opera is far and away the best. IE has the most users.Firefox is constantly trying to get IE's numbers. And Firefox just adds bells and whistles which Opera has had for aeons. It is a happy middle ground for people who would like to believe they actually have something better than the riff-raff. Chrome is just a new toy. I don't think anybody gives a s**t anymore about this subject. May I suggest a topic for an article? Write about the viability of IPTV in India. That will make for interesting reading. Spare us your firefox craze. It is BORING!!

I don't see why you have problem with IE8 RC1 setup size or time...? It's a "release candidate"... since the final version will be "automatically and silently" installed through windows update (and update will definitely be much smaller than this one)... no one in their right mind should check setup performance of an "NOT FINAL" build.

Ms IE8 is a 'professional' browser from a professionally competent company providing value for money products.Freebies companies like google are yet to make their free browser Chrome, easily compatible even to those sites that have a very obsolete designed. A browser needs to to be a everywhere compatible & userfriendly for the most novice.

To be fair, it was necessary to compare with Firefox 3.1 beta 2 which get to the Acid test 3 92/100 what is pretty good. This version is also twice faster than the previous one.

I must say for advanced users of Firefox, the addons are like a bit of vendor lock in as there is no facility in mozilla to take a back up of the addons something like the functionality of foxmarks. This is one major reason preventing me from switching to Chrome which has its own problems. Looks like I must try opera as well.

I have been using Chrome since it started up back in Beta and made available for the public. When Chrome 2.0 hits I would expect a lot of users to at least try it since they are adding in support for add-ons. Before using Chrome I was a heavy Firefox user. However I rarely used the add-ons and so it is not a big issue for me. I would try IE8 but I only use IE at work and have never really liked it myself. I like Chrome since it combines the home page layout of Opera but also the browsing speed of Firefox (and Opera). Secondly I have really found the URL/Search bar in Chrome to be very addicting. When ever I need to look something up I can just create a new tab and type in what I am looking for, instead of using the google search or going to google.com. This saves time for me and I notice I miss it when I work on other browsers. The only thing I don't like which I know they are fixing is the in-ability to auto-scroll with the mouse. At first that really bugged me but I have made due without it. I use Vista and so Windows Aero takes over for that bright blue in Chrome. I turned Aero off and I think that blue is way to annoying.

I have a pathetically slow internet connection and only Firefox works for me. I know Opera is a good browser but somehow it works very slow on my connection. Chrome, I tried but failed to generate any enthusiasm. And IE8, the less i speak the better, totally refuses to open sites when the connection crawls. Firefox rocks, ont only it loads the sites fastest, it never gives up when the connection is really crawling. Hats off.

Sold on Chrome. Just tried IE8 enticed by the " Web Slice". Not as clever as I hoped! I was looking for (and will move to which ever browser can do this) The ability to highlight some text and click, there on the Fav's bar is my text, updated live while I surf the rest of the net. e.g. "Everton 5 - Man United 2" Why can't this be done? IE8 needs the web page to have that feature programmed in!!

I haven't tried IE8 yet (still IE7) but have consistently swapped between Opera, Firefox and Chrome. I only use MSIE because some sites only support that browser. Firefox annoys me because it is slow to start but I otherwise love it. Opera is a good & fast all-rounder. It's really good for downloading stuff. Chrome is my current favourity because it's fast and simple in design. It's rapidly getting better and has been extremely stable.

What kind of comparison is this? you test the IE-8 RC1 but decide not to pit it against Firefox 3.1 Beta2? I know Firefox would still beat IE but when writing a professional article atleast do proper comparisons.

GadgetGuy, the author has if you notice, only talked about non beta browsers.. the only reason RC1 is in because it is "almost" a finished version.. also, it has been mentioned in the very start that this is not a review to judge what the "best" browser out there is. I think TT should refrain from doin such comparos and even the author seems to be thinking on that lines. Because this is one subject that has been talked about for a gazillion times but there will always be some controversy in the end. BTW, that title is a bit misleading. and guess what? OPERA rULES! :D

The only reason to use chrome is for the integrated and very smooth Private mode. (I won't say real estate because you can turn off ALL of Opera's bars if you want that.) The only reason to use Firefox is for the occasional ASP site that is so badly coded that it won't load on Opera.
