Blogs Abuzz About Gmail Security Flaw

Bloggers and website-holders who use Gmail in a tizzy

In December 2007, a Gmail security exploit was reported which led to website theft like David Airey's website. Later, Google claimed that the exploit was fixed. However, recent ramblings over the web indicate the existence of one.

But why would a hacker do that? Hold your domain for ransom, of course!

At his blog GeekCondition, Brandon has posted about a security flaw that works by creation of a forced malicious filter without having access to a user s Gmail username and password. Due to this flaw, some domains registered at GoDaddy were stolen as reported by Makeuseof.com.

For detailed explanation of the exploit, go to GeekCondition.

Whether the exploit was possible on any browser wasn't clarified. But the exploit has the potential of not only stealing domain, but also compromising future emails to user account.

In response, Google Information Security Engineer Chris Evans posted on Google Online Security Blog that the Gmail exploit was a speculation and that its investigations indicated no evidence of Gmail vulnerability. The post further says that the method used was phishing under which people were tricked into sharing account information via emails from customized fake domains.

To be on the safe side, never open emails sent from unknown or unidentified individuals, disable IMAP from your Gmail account settings, avoid using Gmail as contact email for sensitive information, and finally upgrade to private registration while registering a domain. Also, encrypt browser connection through Gmail settings.
