    BlackBerrys Outsell iPhones in U.S.

The good times for Research In Motion (RIM) continue with recent news that the BlackBerry Curve has managed to outsell the Apple iPhone in the first quarter of 2009, in U.S.

That, incidentally, makes the BlackBerry Curve the best selling smartphone in U.S. If that wasn't enough, RIM dominated the smartphones chart with as many as three handsets finding place in the coveted top 5 largest selling phones list there. All this came with the added satisfaction of "beating" the iPhone 3G and relegating it to the second spot. Two other BlackBerry phones; the Storm and the Pearl took the third and fourth spot respectively. T-Mobile's G1 managed to come in at a respectable fifth position.

The fact that RIM has managed to beat the iPhone 3G, which was the top seller in the last two quarters of 2008, comes as a big achievement in itself. In 2008, the Curve came in at a close second while the Palm Centro stood at the third place. One factor behind the Curve making such a huge headway is that unlike the iPhone, which is limited to one carrier, the Curve is available on all the four major networks in U.S.

Before we brush off Apple, let us keep in mind that the smartphone war is still heating up. Apple is already readying its new iPhone -- while Palm is about to launch the critically acclaimed Pre which has the looks and the panache to take on the any serious competition. Then, there is the Android platform, which is fast gaining acceptance worldwide. Looks like we will have one exciting year ahead!

This is a BS article. The fact there has been rumors of a new iPhone in June have slowed iPhone sales rather than blackBerry sales increasing. Typical Apple bashing. I have nothing against the blackberry - its gr8 phone for those that need its various features. But dont BS that its outselling apple sales would be down.

Well, I do not see any Apple bashing happening here. The reports are from NDS and has been reported by reuters. Whats with people being so emotional when it comes to Apple? I think the Article does add that Apple is available with only one Carrier, while the BlackBerry is on all four. Where then is the Apple bashing here?

Anyone think that this has anything to do with the Curve being available on ALL of the major carriers and the iPhone only available on one of them? I sell for AT&T, from my personal experience there is WAY more interest in iPhone than Blackberry, although they are both great devices and other than the BB Bold they're the first two phones I'd recommend to any customer.

I see the applites are already on the case! I view apple more like a religion, because it is everything that the people that like it soo much has complained about for years when other companies do it. I think it is a nice product, but very limited when compared with a blackberry as far as companywide use and support. It's great for my kid though.

Really.. War! I'm surprise that Apple even had a chance against blackberry who has been in the market for years .So I don't get why it is amazing that they beat Apple with only 1 Iphone and 1 and only carrier Duh! Cleary, Blackberry will remain # 1 for many years...This is a fight that Apple may never win but may not care to win because they are shaking the cellphone market now that everybody has a touch screen fetist

Features for price, the Curve beats the iPhone, BAD! Now when v3 of the OS for the iPhone is released, and if it has all the features that they said that it would, then the iPhone will make up some ground, BUT ATT is planing on charging extra for tethering, which is a another ding in the iPhone's armor! Curve users have had this for years, at no extra cost. It is definitely time to ditch the single provider....

RIM has had years in the industry, the fact that apple is even second is remarkable considering the foothold that Blackberries had in the marketplace. Don't let this article fool you RIM is still scared of apples ability to take away customers. Also RIM offers BBs on multiple carriers, Apple only offers through ATT, if/when Apple teams up with Verizon I think you'll be seeing a much different headline.

  • I don't, iPod Touch is redundant when you can buy good media phones
