Battleforge [GCA 2008]

Battleforge [GCA 2008]

Techtree News Staff, Sep 22, 2008 1203 hrs IST

A card-based massively multiplayer strategy game that we should all be hyped for

Now here's something new. Battleforge is an RTS -- but not like any other RTS where you have to wait for your troops to spawn and struggle with tech trees and juggle multiple buildings... This is the fastest moving RTS game we have played. It also has a unique feature of being a card-based game, but we will get to that aspect a bit later. Finally -- it's an MMORTS, and can only be played online.

We had the opportunity to get a peak at this game, behind closed doors, at the GCA '09 conference in Singapore. The speed at which this game progresses just blew our mind and got us hooked from the start. Here's how the game is setup: You basically have two types of buildings to create all through the game. One is a power supply unit and the other is a monument. The more power you can supply, the more the units that can be built. The monument in the game determine the type of units that can be built: fire, frost, nature and shadow. Each monument is equal to one tier and there can be a maximum of four tiers. This means that the units which can be spawned range from tier 1 units to tier 4 units. These power supplies and monuments are located throughout the map and just need to be clicked on a few times to be captured.

Now to the aspects of management and strategy. As we mentioned earlier, you have a cards system in the game. You start off with a series of cards which may have all four types of units. Your hotbar can hold 20 cards in all. Each card has a limit to the number of units that can be called from that card. Also, the units are tier-locked, so you need to plan how you intend to use the monuments. Of course, each card used will spend some of the energy from your power supplies. And as you can imagine, the amount of power draw depends on tier and type of unit. The higher tier units have different skills too; causing damage based on skill used--some skills can unleash massive amounts of hurt on your enemies. Oh yeah -- the units you control in this game look awesome and the damage unleashed and visual effects combine to offer a visual splendour.

The overall game: the concept, the strategy and the effects put together, makes this one to watch and wait for.

So let's round it up: Battleforge is an RTS, nay, an MMORTS, a card-based MMORTS to be precise, with a dash of RPG flavour and PvP and PvE combat. Oh and did we mention that it's free to play? You heard us -- the only thing you need to pay for in this game are booster cards which can be bought virtually -- to expand your gameplay. There is also a marketplace in development where players can trade their cards.

We can't wait for its January 2009 release.
